CACC 244 PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the middleweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Montreal, with a TWGC record of 17 wins and 13 losses; Ryan Hell! And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 20 wins and 18 losses; DJ Augustus ! The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Stewart Dunkirk and Cecil Peabody.
Let's get this grappling contest under way! Who will be victorious? Hell decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Hell (2) vs (0) Augustus Augustus tries to roll over but Hell keeps him under control. Hell wants to advance to full mount but Augustus doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead. Hell trying to control but Augustus is working from the bottom. Hell stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Augustus swivels though and keeps the full guard. Hell pushes down on Augustus 's leg and manages to get into half guard. Hell trying to mount his opponent but Augustus defends it. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Hell seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Augustus does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Hell is working for a kimura but Augustus is defending it quite comfortably.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Augustus has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Hell is working away from the top position though. Hell is looking for a kimura but Augustus is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Hell to get the leverage. Hell trying to control from half guard but Augustus is working away. Augustus felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it. Hell trying to advance position but Augustus counters by regaining guard. Hell wants to control from the top but Augustus keeps moving. Augustus looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hell is one step ahead there. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Hell tries to free his leg and advance position but Augustus is retaining full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Hell passes into half guard. Hell trying to pass the guard but Augustus defending well. Hell is working for a kimura here but Augustus manages to reverse the position and he's now in Hell's guard.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Hell throws his legs up looking for a submission but Augustus uses it to pass to side control.

That's six minutes gone in the round. Hell tries to get back to half guard but can't. Hell is not content to let Augustus control the position. Augustus content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though. Augustus trying to control the position but Hell is working away.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Hell tries to buck Augustus off but Augustus is having none of it. Augustus wants to lay and pray for a moment but Hell keeps working. Augustus goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Hell has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Augustus but great work by Hell. Hell is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Augustus knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Augustus gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there! Augustus tries to lock up and control but Hell gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Hell wants to control the pace but Augustus is squirming around nicely.

Hell is looking for a triangle here but Augustus uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Hell tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Augustus wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Augustus wants to lay and pray for a moment but Hell keeps working. Hell is trying to control Augustus 's posture but Augustus avoids it.

That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Hell is looking for a sweep. Augustus is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Hell wants to get back to full guard but Augustus has mounted him! Score +3 for passing guard: Hell (10) vs (13) Augustus Augustus controlling from the full mount. Augustus moves to back control. Score +3 for taking back: Hell (10) vs (16) Augustus Augustus controlling well, preventing Hell from escaping the position.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Hell looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment. So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
Hell tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell! Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Hell can't escape the position.
And that's the end of the fight! Augustus wins on points by 16 to 10. In his post fight interview, DJ Augustus started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception. |
