PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Donny Jay (ranked 4053 p4p, 22770 weight class) and Peter OBrien (ranked 518 p4p, 759 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Donny Jay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 7 - 0, fighting out of London, Peter OBrien!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Gregory Folan and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

OBrien gets a takedown into half guard.
OBrien is thwarting Jay's attempts to control the position.
Jay gets back to full guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

OBrien drops back looking for a leg! Jay is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Jay manages to kick OBrien off! OBrien jumps back into Jay's guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jay is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Jay lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

OBrien is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

OBrien is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Jay looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
OBrien has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Jay.

Jay looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
No joy there for Jay, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

OBrien takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
OBrien looks to score with a jab to the body but Jay is just out of range.
Jay lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Jay is looking to clinch but OBrien is avoiding it.
OBrien shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Jay but Jay pushes him off and we're back to square one.
OBrien throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Jay moves in looking to clinch but OBrien pushes him off.
OBrien lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by OBrien.
Donny Jay seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

OBrien displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Jay throws out the jab.

That was a close round but I would say that Donny Jay will probably get the nod.

OBrien's coach down at JAG Battle Gym was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on OBrien's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.

Well Jay has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
