PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jubei Akechi (ranked 743 p4p, 871 weight class) and Phillip Terrell (ranked 101 p4p, 120 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 7 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jubei Akechi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 15 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Phillip Terrell!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Don Winkell and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Akechi uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Terrell.
Akechi slips a straight right by Terrell.
Akechi looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Akechi throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Terrell keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Akechi takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.

Akechi fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Terrell to the ground. Akechi is now in Terrell's guard.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Terrell manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
Terrell gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Akechi.
Terrell makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Akechi prevents a body shot from Terrell.
Terrell misses with a hook from the clinch.
Akechi wants a takedown but no success here.

Terrell escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Akechi attempts a counter takedown but Terrell avoids it well and moves away.
Akechi scores with a hook to the body. Terrell takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.

Akechi displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Terrell throws out the jab.
Akechi throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Terrell stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Akechi shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Terrell defends it nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jubei Akechi. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Terrell swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Akechi shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Phillip Terrell seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Terrell loads up on a big right hand but Akechi slips the punch.
Phillip Terrell is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Terrell throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.

Akechi shoots in for a double leg but Terrell sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Terrell throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Akechi on the side of the head.

Akechi drops down looking for a counter takedown but Terrell sprawls and moves away.

Terrell lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Terrell.
Akechi takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Akechi takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Terrell tries to bum rush Akechi with a series of wild strikes but Akechi uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Akechi closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Terrell quickly recovers to half guard.

Terrell has hold of Akechi's hands but Akechi slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Terrell regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Akechi.
Akechi connects with a couple of short punches.
Akechi throws a big elbow that misses.
Terrell pulls Akechi in close to prevent any damage.
Akechi distracts Terrell with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Terrell is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Akechi keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Terrell's head.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Phillip Terrell dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Akechi throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Akechi shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Terrell as he jumps to the side.
That kick from Terrell tenderised Akechi's leg. Akechi is trying to keep his angry face on.

Terrell moves forwards but Akechi connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Akechi chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Terrell can pounce on him.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A looping hook to the body misses from Akechi. Terrell does a little dance to reset his feet.
Terrell throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Terrell tries to land a front kick but Akechi steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

Akechi takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

Terrell takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Akechi throws an overhand right that lands on Terrell's shoulder, as Terrell tries to avoid the shot.
Akechi gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Terrell will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Phillip Terrell showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Akechi takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jubei Akechi.
I think Terrell has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
