PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Dwalin Broadaxe (ranked 1741 p4p, 1402 weight class) and Jim Lahey (ranked 192 p4p, 163 weight class). Jim Lahey will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dwalin Broadaxe!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jim Lahey!
The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, Steve Montenegro and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lahey connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Broadaxe momentarily.
Lahey just misses with a punch to the body.
Lahey misses with a straight right.

Broadaxe scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Broadaxe tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Broadaxe has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Broadaxe wants to lay and pray for a moment but Lahey keeps working.
Lahey can't do much from the bottom here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Lahey is trying to control Broadaxe's posture but Broadaxe avoids it.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Broadaxe is nestled in close to Lahey, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Broadaxe is looking to take a break and control but Lahey is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Lahey pushes Broadaxe off looking to stand but Broadaxe dives back in and keeps control.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Broadaxe has his takedown stuffed
and Lahey counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Broadaxe slips a straight right by Lahey.

No luck for Broadaxe with that takedown attempt.
Jim Lahey is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Lahey forces Broadaxe back against the cage and clinches.
Broadaxe tries to score a body lock takedown but Lahey shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dwalin Broadaxe. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Broadaxe is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Lahey gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Lahey misses with a hook from the clinch.
Broadaxe is working for takedown but Lahey is calmly controlling the position for now.

Broadaxe manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Broadaxe has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Lahey can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Broadaxe looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

That was a close round but I would say that Dwalin Broadaxe will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Lahey throws an ugly left hook that misses

and Broadaxe counters with a nice double leg into side control. Lahey won't be happy with that.
Broadaxe lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Lahey down.
Lahey gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

Broadaxe jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Lahey is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Lahey and Broadaxe has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Broadaxe wants to control but Lahey is keeping him busy.

Broadaxe goes for an armbar but Lahey turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Lahey.

Broadaxe looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Lahey trying to control the position from guard on top but Broadaxe is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Broadaxe might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Lahey throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Broadaxe works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Lahey wants to stand but Broadaxe is controlling his posture from full guard.

Broadaxe is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Lahey is aware though and is defending well.

Broadaxe has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Lahey is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Broadaxe.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Lahey lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Broadaxe down.

Lahey is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Broadaxe to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Broadaxe shrugs it off.

Lahey throwing strikes here but Broadaxe is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Broadaxe drops back, looking for a kneebar! Lahey looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Lahey looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Lahey!

Dwalin Broadaxe overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Lahey looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Lahey is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
