PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Cody Evans (ranked 2131 p4p, 6479 weight class) and Alphonse Fuguego (ranked 229 p4p, 468 weight class). The key to victory for Cody Evans has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cody Evans!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Alphonse Fuguego!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Frank Dennis and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Evans works over Fuguego's head and body with a nice combination.
We've been told by Evans's head coaches at Rabid Dog that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Fuguego throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Evans sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Fuguego with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Evans to score with a decent uppercut.
Fuguego swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Evans is looking for a counter combo.
Evans throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Evans lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Fuguego circles away quickly and effectively.
Evans throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Fuguego's waist but Fuguego gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Evans off to one side.

Fuguego changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Evans looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Fuguego wants to control but Evans is keeping him busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Fuguego in side control lands a decent elbow.
Fuguego misses with the ground and pound.
Evans knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Fuguego on the ground.
Evans is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Evans on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Evans tries to get out of the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Fuguego lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Evans down.
Evans is being controlled here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Evans tries to bench press Fuguego off him but Fuguego keeps the position.

Fuguego is trying to get an arm triangle but Evans is defending well.
Fuguego misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Fuguego wants to lay and pray for a moment but Evans keeps working.
Fuguego controls the position from side control.
Fuguego trying to control the action but Evans is working from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Fuguego might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Evans haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Evans is trying to improve his position.
Fuguego is trying to ground and pound but Evans uses the momentary lack of control by Fuguego to regain half guard.
Evans wants to control but Fuguego passes into side.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Evans defending against the ground and pound.
Evans is not content to let Fuguego control the position.

Fuguego thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Fuguego misses with the ground and pound.
Fuguego has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Evans is not content to let Fuguego control the position.
Evans tries to buck Fuguego off but Fuguego is having none of it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Fuguego working the head with strikes.
Fuguego lands a nice forearm strike.

Fuguego working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Evans tries to bench press Fuguego off him but Fuguego keeps the position.
Fuguego trying to control the position but Evans is working away.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Fuguego has hold of Evans's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Evans seems comfortable defending it but Fuguego has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Evans is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Evans is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Fuguego couldn't care less - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:52 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Alphonse Fuguego!
Our winner, Alphonse Fuguego, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
