Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Master Bates (ranked 2309 p4p, 3992 weight class) and Joseph Monferand (ranked 300 p4p, 464 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Master Bates! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Joseph Monferand! The judges for this bout are James Atkins, James Glass and William Gold.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight. Bates shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Monferand napping and manages to drive through into side control! Monferand is looking to reverse the position. Bates throws a strike aimed at the side of Monferand's head but Monferand avoids it well. Monferand tries to improve position but can't. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Bates connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Monferand some visible discomfort.
Monferand is looking for a sweep. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Monferand struggling a bit here. Monferand manages to work his way to half guard, despite Bates's best efforts. Monferand tries to roll over but Bates keeps him under control.
That's one minute gone in the round. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Monferand can do anything to dispel that myth. Monferand wants to get back to full guard but Bates has passed into side control. Monferand really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Bates. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Monferand tries to bench press Bates off him but Bates keeps the position. We've been hearing good reports from Bates's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Monferand landing some decent shots from guard. Monferand got a little sloppy there for a moment and Bates has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! It's a bit of a token attempt though and Monferand regains control of the situation pretty easily.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Monferand is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Monferand is on top in guard.

My spies in Canucks Combat Club inform me that Monferand has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! Monferand avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
