PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Eddie James (ranked 4193 p4p, 5943 weight class) and Freddy Renard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Renard comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Cyclone kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Freddy Renard told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Eddie James!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Freddy Renard!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Dmitry Maklakov and Igor Prikhodko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Donk. James catches Renard right on the button with a cross.

It looks like Freddy Renard has been cut.
James misses with a body kick.
Renard misses with a double jab
and James counters with a three punch combo that has Renard backing up. Renard nods at James to acknowledge the strikes.

James gets caught napping as Renard dives in and scores a takedown. James manages to retain guard.

James has his feet on Renard's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Renard looks to land a combination but James avoids it well.

and James counters by moving into the clinch.
James jumps guard but Renard turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
James is stalling here.

Renard tries to pull guard but James holds him up against the cage and eventually Renard drops back down to his feet.

James throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Renard blocks it with crossed arms.
James wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

James wants to control from the top but Renard keeps moving.
Renard manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. James manages to get himself to full guard.

James tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Renard wants to pass the guard but James is keeping the position.

James is pulling down on Renard's head. It's preventing any offense from Renard, at least for the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Renard avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
James has a closed guard, preventing Renard from standing up.

Renard stands and steps away. James gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

and James counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
James shoots in but no luck this time.
James stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and James wants it to stay on the feet.

The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.

That's time! James's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

James throws a low kick but Renard avoids it.
Renard goes for a double leg but James avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as James continues to drive forward.
James shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Renard sprawls well. Renard wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. James gets slowly back to his feet.
James fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

James moves into the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Renard shoots in for a takedown but James shows good takedown defense.
Renard has his takedown stuffed
and James counters with a series of strikes. Renard will be more careful next time no doubt.

James is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Renard is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

James is staying active underneath Renard, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

James makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
Horrible takedown attempt by Renard or perhaps it was just good defense by James, which made it look bad.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

James does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Renard is defended easily by James.
Renard moves in looking to clinch but James pushes him off.

James is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Renard can do to turn this around?

Renard tries to clinch up but James circles away and keeps his distance.
Renard throws a head kick but James moves out of range.
James throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Renard's waist but Renard gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing James off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Eddie James. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Renard closes this distance looking for a takedown but James circles away.
Renard takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
James falls off balance throwing a combination
and Renard counters with a nice low kick that buckles James's knee momentarily.

James gets caught flat footed, as Renard shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

James manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Eddie James is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
James shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Renard as he jumps to the side.
James dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

James is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Renard to keep the fight standing.

Renard has James pressed against the cage, preventing James from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Renard is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. James is defending well for now.

Renard escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Renard moves to clinch but James breaks away
and James counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
James shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Renard as he avoids it easily.

Renard shoots for a double leg takedown but James sprawls well. He's pushed Renard's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
James rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Renard moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
A nice side step and Renard releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.

James shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Renard as he avoids it easily.
Renard tries to counter by closing the distance.
Renard throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

James shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Renard's guard.
Renard looking for a sweep. Not yet Renard, not yet.

Renard working for a triangle but James defends it easily.
Freddy Renard has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Eddie James is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

James gets to his feet. Renard looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Eddie James.
Well James has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A relieved looking Eddie James thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
Freddy Renard spoke after the fight, saying 'Im going to be back!, train harder and smarter for the next fight, improve some weak spots and success will come...soon'.
