PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jake Bird (ranked 60 p4p, 95 weight class) and Juanito Escobar (ranked 10 p4p, 16 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 26 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jake Bird!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Juanito Escobar!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Taro Takaoka and Ren Mimura.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bird misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Escobar.
Escobar feints the counter takedown.
Bird lands with a hook. Escobar tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Bird throws a body shot but no joy.
Bird on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Escobar tries to move into range but Bird moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.

Escobar shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Escobar was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Bird is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Escobar off and has taken his back!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Bird controlling well, preventing Escobar from escaping the position.
Bird seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.

Bird is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Escobar is defending well though. Bird let's go of the attempt for now.

Bird is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Escobar knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Escobar for a finish.
Bird is trying to stick to Escobar's back but Escobar is turning into Bird. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Bird's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Escobar.

Bird had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Escobar defends it easily.

Bird is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Escobar is aware though and is defending well.
Bird might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Escobar tries to free his leg and advance position but Bird is retaining full guard.

Bird working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Escobar doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Escobar manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Escobar is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Escobar wants to control from the top but Bird keeps moving.

Bird working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Escobar has passed into half guard!

Escobar is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Bird makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Bird.

Bird is looking to cinch up a triangle. Escobar throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Bird's body to avoid the submission. Bird has instead reached around Escobar's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Bird arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Jake Bird!

During a confident post fight interview, Jake Bird thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
