WPGC 9 PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Amsterdam, with a TWGC record of 14 wins and 10 losses; Long Wang! And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 2 wins and 5 losses; Vasiliy Kulik! The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Thiago Cunha and Seu Braga.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Kulik closes the distance and pushes Wang back into the cage. Wang works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Wang (2) vs (0) Kulik Wang wants to control from the top but Kulik keeps moving. Kulik wants to sweep here but Wang controlling him for the moment. Wang is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Wang has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Wang trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Wang sitting in guard, not really doing much.
That's one minute gone in the round. Wang seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Kulik for as long as he can get away with. Kulik is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Wang pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Kulik is keeping the position for now. Wang drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Kulik manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Wang has Kulik in his guard. That's two minutes gone in the round. Wang tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Kulik wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Kulik taking a breather here. Kulik tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

My spies in KFA inform me that Kulik has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! Wang regains half guard there - taking advantage of Kulik's attempt to lay and pray for a moment. Wang gets back to full guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Wang is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Kulik is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Wang is trying to control the position but Kulik postures up. Kulik engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Kulik forces his way into half guard. Kulik is figuring out what he wants to do next.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Wang controlling the position well. Kulik is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Wang! Score +3 for passing guard: Wang (2) vs (8) Kulik Wang wants to hold on but Kulik pushes him away. Wang can't escape the position.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Kulik tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Kulik wants to control the pace but Wang is squirming around nicely. Wang reaches up to try and control the position but Kulik seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Wang rolls and tries to escape and now Kulik has his back!

That's eight minutes gone in the round. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Kulik controlling Wang's posture. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Kulik is on top in guard.

That's nine minutes gone in the round. Wang keeping moving, preventing Kulik from controlling successfully. Kulik trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Kulik wants to control from the top but Wang keeps moving. Wang wants to sweep here but Kulik controlling him for the moment.
That's ten minutes gone in the round. Kulik looking to pass the guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Kulik postures up.
Wang keeping full guard, as Kulik tries to pass. Kulik not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Wang pulls Kulik in to control the position. Kulik sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Wang's guard. Wang is looking for a sweep. Kulik is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Kulik trying to control the pace.
That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Wang is in trouble now - Kulik has advanced to mount! Score +3 for passing guard: Wang (4) vs (16) Kulik Kulik trying to control but he's not successful this time. Kulik controlling the pace for now.

That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Kulik wants to take his opponent's back but he's not managed it. Kulik can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Wang is looking to escape. Kulik content just to control the position here. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
And that's the end of the fight! Kulik wins on points by 16 to 4. Vasiliy Kulik seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website. Long Wang was interviewed post fight and said 'No worries. Everyone here knows my opponent has a bad habit of testing positive for PEDs, so I'm sure this fight will soon be ruled a 'No Contest' by the Athletic Commission.'. |
