Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jake Shields (ranked 1116 p4p, 1843 weight class) and Kongthoranee Sitsongrit (ranked 144 p4p, 241 weight class). Shields comes into the arena with Seven Nation Army blaring out of the sound system. Kongthoranee Sitsongrit will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 9 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jake Shields! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Kongthoranee Sitsongrit! The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Anni Minnemäki and Matti Vanhoillinen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sitsongrit dips to his left and cracks Shields with an uppercut! Sitsongrit defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Shields. Shields takes a shot right to the bread basket. Sitsongrit misses with an uppercut. Shields throws a left and a right that both miss
and Sitsongrit counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Sitsongrit getting the better of the striking in that exchange. Shields shoots in for a takedown but Sitsongrit shows good takedown defense. A good leg kick by Sitsongrit. Shields thows a leg kick but Sitsongrit checks it and Sitsongrit counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena. Sitsongrit slaps away a takedown attempt from Shields, before circling back to the center of the mat. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jake Shields. That's going to take a lot out of him. Shields lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
It looks like Kongthoranee Sitsongrit has been cut. This has been an exciting period of action! Shields fails with the takedown and Sitsongrit counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sitsongrit clobbers Shields with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise. Shields dives in and scores a takedown into Sitsongrit's guard. Sitsongrit looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Sitsongrit is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Shields wants to pass the guard but Sitsongrit is keeping the position. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Sitsongrit can do anything to dispel that myth. Sitsongrit is looking to sweep but instead, Shields has passed into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Shields in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Sitsongrit tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Shields!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Jake Shields! Jake Shields retains his welterweight title! Jake Shields really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that Ma Balls Is Hot Clothing logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
