PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Micah Hawk (ranked 3577 p4p, 5617 weight class) and Kaspars Petrovs (ranked 403 p4p, 515 weight class). Kaspars Petrovs struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 157.0lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 28 - 21 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Micah Hawk!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 36 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Kaspars Petrovs!
The judges for this bout are Nard Betker, Albert Achterberg and Saam Ante.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Petrovs throws a lazy uppercut
and Hawk counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Petrovs looks to land a left hand but Hawk moved out of range nicely.
Petrovs takes a swing at Hawk's ribcage but misses.
Petrovs throws a body kick that misses.
Hawk throwing a counter right hand but Petrovs manages to avoid it.

Hawk closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Petrovs to the mat! Petrovs manages to get full guard.
Hawk postures up in Petrovs's guard and throws a big left but Petrovs blocks it.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Petrovs is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Hawk drops back, looking for a kneebar! Petrovs looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Petrovs looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Petrovs!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Petrovs lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Hawk down.
The strikes coming from Petrovs are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Hawk wants to control but Petrovs postures up.
Hawk is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Petrovs cracks Hawk with an elbow. That is naaassty.

Petrovs tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Petrovs has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Hawk is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Hawk manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Petrovs is refusing to be controlled, as Hawk sits in half guard.
Petrovs is looking to control Hawk's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Petrovs avoid being mounted?

Well, if Hawk is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Hawk working over Petrovs with some ground and pound. Petrovs looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Hawk thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Petrovs's head.
Petrovs felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Hawk wants to free his trapped foot but Petrovs is holding on for dear life with his legs.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Hawk is trying to control the action in half guard but Petrovs is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Hawk passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Petrovs!

Hawk throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Petrovs because Hawk loaded up on that one.

Hawk with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Hawk is working for a guillotine from mount but Petrovs frees his head quite easily.
Hawk looking to control but Petrovs is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Hawk has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Hawk is giving the impression that he's looking to ground and pound but he switches suddenly into a beautiful far side armbar! Petrovs is forced to tap! Great finish!

A relieved looking Micah Hawk thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
