PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rufus Rutger (ranked 655 p4p, 756 weight class) and Kurki Potku (ranked 100 p4p, 115 weight class). Rutger comes to the cage accompanied by Wardance. Kurki Potku told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rufus Rutger!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kurki Potku!
The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Hirohito Nitta.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rutger checks a leg kick nicely.
Potku walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Rutger keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Rutger swinging wildly here.
Potku drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Rutger defends it well.
Rutger definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Rutger throws a lazy uppercut
and Potku counters with a stiff right hand.
Potku fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Potku bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
A telegraphed right hand from Potku misses the target.
Potku lands an overhand right.
Potku tries to clinch but Rutger is having none of it.
Potku looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Potku swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Potku shoots in and gets a takedown into Rutger's guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Potku wants to pass the guard but Rutger is keeping the position.
Rutger pulls Potku in to control the position.
Rutger lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round.
Potku is trying to control the position but Rutger postures up.
Rutger pushing down on Potku's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Potku is not content to let Rutger control the position.
Potku looking for submissions off his back.
Potku is positioning himself well to prevent Rutger advancing to mount.
Rutger will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Potku has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, Rutger escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by Rutger!
That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Potku is looking for a sweep.
Potku looking for a sweep but Rutger has passed into full mount! Oh no!
Potku is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Potku is wriggling around trying to escape.
Rutger looking to ground and pound but Potku is blocking nicely.
Potku is trying to reverse the position but instead Rutger has taken his back - oops!
That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rutger trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Potku doesn't escape.
Rutger not allowing Potku to control his hands.
Rutger is hanging on to Potku's back as he tries to escape.
Rutger doesn't have the hooks in and Potku manages to turn into his guard.
Potku passes into half guard.
Potku works his way into full mount!
Potku with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
That's four minutes gone in the round.
Potku wants to control but instead Rutger manages to regain half guard.
Potku trying to control from Rutger's half guard. Rutger has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Rutger keeping moving, preventing Potku from controlling successfully.
Rutger wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Potku is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Potku stopping the sweep attempt from Rutger.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Kurki Potku will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Potku throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Rutger takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Potku misses with a hook.
Potku scores with a decent looking hook.
Potku connects with a good right hand that stumbles Rutger. Rutger circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Potku lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Rutger lands a head shot.
Rutger works Potku's body with a nice hook.
Rutger takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Rutger throws a series of strikes that have Potku backpedaling.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Rutger cracks Potku with a big right hand that sends him crashing to the floor. Rutger has the opportunity to follow him to the ground but instead he's beckoning Potku to stand back up!
Potku is rocked!
Rutger feints a kick and comes over the top with a right hand, followed by a left hook - both land, sending Potku crashing to the mat! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:42 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Rufus Rutger!
Our winner, Rufus Rutger, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
