Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tommy Pepper! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chris Rogers! The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Wesley Smith and Frank Dennis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rogers fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Pepper sprawls well initially but Rogers persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Rogers decides to stand and escape the position. Pepper scores with the left hand. Rogers knows he should have avoided that one. Rogers doesn't manage to clinch there - Pepper circles away.
Pepper dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Pepper scores with a three punch combo!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Pepper has his takedown stuffed and Rogers counters by clinching up. Rogers tries to break free but Pepper pushes him back against the cage. Pepper wants a takedown.
Pepper drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Rogers gets the underhooks and prevents it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tommy Pepper. That's going to take a lot out of him. Pepper gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rogers is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Pepper pulls his head out easily. Rogers trying to control here.
Rogers has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, Pepper escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by Pepper! Rogers is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Rogers wants to control but Pepper postures up. Rogers tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Pepper wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Rogers looks gassed!
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Pepper with a lazy takedown attempt and Rogers counters with a nice double leg into guard. Pepper working for a triangle but Rogers defends it easily.
Rogers trying to stand up but can't free himself from Pepper's guard. Rogers won't allow Pepper to sweep him here. Rogers decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. Pepper is looking to clinch but Rogers is avoiding it.
Pepper misses with a takedown attempt and Rogers counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Rogers. Rogers's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pepper with a lazy takedown attempt and Rogers counters with a shoot takedown. Pepper fights it but they end up in guard. Rogers wants to pass the guard but Pepper is keeping the position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Rogers stands and steps away. Pepper gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. Pepper looks to land a combination but Rogers avoids it well. Rogers feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Rogers wants to stand but Pepper is controlling his posture from full guard. Rogers is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but Pepper has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Rogers is looking to defend but Pepper has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Rogers! Pepper pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Rogers taps out and this one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:04 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Tommy Pepper! Tommy Pepper is the new lightweight champion!
