PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jack Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Doug Jack (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Johnson kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Devour by Shinedown. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jack Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Doug Jack !
The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Franklyn Lucas and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson shoots in and drives through. Jack sprawls well.
Johnson shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Jack pinned against the cage. Jack gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Johnson tries to clinch up but Jack circles away and keeps his distance.
Nice sprawl there from Jack as Johnson shoots in.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jack Johnson. That's going to take a lot out of him.

It looks like Jack Johnson has been cut.

Jack fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Johnson sprawls well initially but Jack persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Jack moves in looking to clinch but Johnson pushes him off.

and Jack counters by moving into the clinch.

Johnson is breathing heavily.
Johnson is trying to drag Jack to the mat but Jack just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Jack pulls guard successfully.
Jack controls Johnson momentarily but Johnson frees himself.
Jack manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Johnson manages to get himself to full guard.
Jack makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Jack wants to get up but he can't break Johnson's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Johnson is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Jack postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Jack tries to close the distance and clinch but Johnson swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
A left and a right from Jack both land. Nice combination.
The fight stays on the outside here - Johnson looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
You can see the frustration on Jack 's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Johnson is looking to take a break and control but Jack is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Jack shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Johnson as he jumps to the side.
Johnson has a takedown stuffed.

Jack closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Johnson tries a knee to the head but Jack blocks it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jack has picked Johnson up - he's going for a ride! Jack dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.

Johnson working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Jack doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Jack manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Jack stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Johnson swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Jack passes Johnson's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Jack wants to pass the guard but Johnson is defending well.

Doug Jack showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



Jack shoots in and bounces Johnson off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Johnson had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Jack is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Johnson Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Jack 's back instead.

Jack wants to get back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Johnson trying desperately to keep hold of the dominant position.

Doug Jack has got the better of the ground game so far.

Jack drops back looking for a leg! Johnson is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Johnson manages to kick Jack off! Jack jumps back into Johnson's guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Johnson tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Johnson unloads a knee to the mid-section. Jack lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.

Johnson is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Jack has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Johnson with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Johnson jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Jack manages to avoid the submission attempt.

Jack really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Johnson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jack Johnson.
Well Jack has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
