The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
penn connects with a good right hand that stumbles carter. carter circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
penn shoots in but carter avoids the takedown attempt easily.
carter scores a takedown into full mount!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
penn tries to get back to half guard but can't.
carter landing punches.

penn gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
carter looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks penn with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. carter lands a nice short elbow.
carter thows a huge punch but penn dodges it nicely.
carter is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. penn doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time carter.
penn is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of carter's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take carter's back!

carter is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if penn gets his way!

penn trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure carter doesn't escape.

penn wants to stand and escape but instead carter has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

penn goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, carter rolls with the submission and now he's on top in penn's guard! Nice work there by carter!
carter wants to control from the top but penn keeps moving.

penn doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

penn controls carter momentarily but carter frees himself.
carter drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but penn manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now carter has penn in his guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
penn gets to his feet - carter follows without any prompting.
carter clinches with his opponent.
penn drops down looking for an ankle pick but carter pulls his leg out and moves away.
carter shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. penn is trying to defend but carter finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!
carter throws a right and a left that both miss.
penn looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
carter is staying active underneath penn, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
penn decides to return to a standing position.

penn gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and carter counters with a nice double leg into side control. penn won't be happy with that.
penn is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked carter off and has taken his back!
penn has good solid back control here.
carter manages to scramble and ends up in full guard, under a barage of strikes . Great composure from carter.
