Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Chris Cannon! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kage Smith! The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Sosuke Kotani.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cannon is trying hard to land a takedown here. Smith sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Cannon fails to land the takedown. Cannon wants to clinch. Cannon closes this distance looking for a takedown but Smith circles away. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Chris Cannon. That's going to take a lot out of him. Smith wants to clinch up but Cannon keeps it at a distance. Smith gets a clinch. Cannon managing to block the knees to the body from Smith.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Thud! ouch! good body kick from Smith - that will leave a mark!
Smith displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Cannon. Smith tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. No joy there for Smith, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cannon drives through with a takedown into guard. Smith keeping full guard, as Cannon tries to pass. Cannon drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Cannon jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Smith not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Cannon won't allow Smith to get back to his feet. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Smith looks gassed! Smith avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cannon landing with the ground and pound. Cannon won't allow Smith to get back to his feet. Cannon slips nicely into half guard. Cannon scoring with strikes to the body and head. Cannon scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Smith trying to hold on to Cannon's head to control him but Cannon postures up.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Cannon lands a nice short elbow. Smith tries to kick Cannon off but Cannon keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Cannon controlling the pace. Smith really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Cannon. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Cannon is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Smith sees it coming and defends easily. Cannon is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! Smith is in a horrible position here. Cannon smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Smith is squirming around, avoiding Cannon's attempts to control the action. Cannon landing punches. Cannon landing strikes from the mount. Cannon working the ground and pound effectively.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Smith takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position. Cannon working the ground and pound effectively.

Cannon closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Cannon lands in his opponent's guard. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Cannon is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. Cannon makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Cannon throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Smith works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Cannon drops back looking for a leg! Smith is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Smith manages to kick Cannon off! Cannon jumps back into Smith's guard. Cannon throws a big right hand that misses. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cannon is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Cannon will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Smith not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Cannon has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Cannon landing some decent shots from guard. Cannon trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Smith manages to land a sweep and now he's on top! Smith makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Cannon looking for a guillotine here but Smith defends easily.
Cannon is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Smith is aware though and is defending well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smith keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Cannon's head. Cannon throwing strikes off his back to little effect.

Cannon keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully. Cannon looking for a sweep. Not yet Cannon, not yet. Smith trying to control but Cannon is working from the bottom. Smith must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Cannon looking to hit a scissor sweep but Smith is one step ahead there. Smith tries to stand but Cannon is controlling from the bottom.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Smith misses with a takedown and Cannon counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Smith! Chris Cannon overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. BOOM! Cannon connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Cannon looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead. Cannon unloads with some shots from mount but Smith bucks and avoids them well.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Cannon working for a submission but Smith is keeping him at bay. Cannon sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it! Cannon moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Smith has worked his arm free - good work by Smith!
Cannon misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Kage Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Cannon avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Cannon lands a couple of elbows. Cannon trying to control but Smith is working from the bottom. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Smith can do anything to dispel that myth. Smith keeping full guard, as Cannon tries to pass. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Cannon is working hard here to advance position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smith utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Smith wants to stand and escape but Cannon is having none of it.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Cannon dodges the punch combination from Smith.
Smith tries to clinch but Cannon is having none of it. Smith throws out a loose jab but Cannon uses good head movement to avoid it. Cannon shoots and misses and Smith counters into the clinch. Nicely done. Smith manages to break the clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Cannon keeps the fight on the outside. Cannon tries for a takedown but Smith circles away easily and Smith counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Cannon keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Smith wants to take a breather but Cannon is having none of it. Cannon tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land. Cannon flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Cannon is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Smith's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Smith's back! Smith fending off the submission attempt from Cannon. Cannon misses with a punch to the head.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Smith defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Cannon's arms. Smith wants to get back to his feet. Cannon loading up with punches from the back mount - how long can Smith hold on?

Cannon lands punches and elbows. Cannon is trying to stick to Smith's back but Smith is turning into Cannon. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Cannon's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Smith.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Cannon is striking but Smith is not phased and passes to half guard. Cannon is pressing down on Smith's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Smith wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Cannon's closed guard. He's half up but Cannon has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Cannon pivots and extends the arm, Smith falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Cannon! Well done that man!
