PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Morris McDonald (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carl Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jones has chosen Dillinger Escape Plan - 43% Burnt as his entrance music. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones throws a combination but it was largely blocked by McDonald.
Jones misses with a low kick.
Jones throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

McDonald feints and as Jones raises his hands in defense, McDonald changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
McDonald's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Jones working for a triangle but McDonald defends it easily.

McDonald trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

McDonald is stalling here. Jones is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! McDonald seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Jones has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

McDonald can't do much from the bottom here.

Jones tries to stand but McDonald controls the position and pulls Jones into his guard.
McDonald not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Jones throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Carl Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! McDonald crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Jones - the referee stops the clock and McDonald gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Jones. McDonald manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

McDonald throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Jones was covering up waiting for the punch and McDonald finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Jones is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

McDonald throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Jones looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! McDonald has picked Jones up and slammed him! Jones can't keep hold of the triangle and McDonald manages to pass to side control!

McDonald slaps away a takedown attempt from Jones, before circling back to the center of the mat.
McDonald throws a chopping leg kick but Jones manages to avoid taking any serious damage.

McDonald closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Jones to the mat! Jones manages to get full guard.
McDonald passes Jones's left leg - he's now in half guard.
McDonald seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Jones does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
McDonald is controlling the pace.
McDonald throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

McDonald is keen to just control but Jones is a slippery customer.
McDonald wants to pass the guard but Jones is defending well.
Jones is trying to control but can't.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McDonald wants to control but Jones is keeping him busy.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

McDonald is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Jones defends it well.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Jones can't keep his opponent in guard - McDonald advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

McDonald slips a nice elbow through Jones's hands, connecting with Jones's forehead.
McDonald looks to land a strike but Jones avoids it nicely and regains full guard.

McDonald lands a couple of decent looking shots.

McDonald drops back, looking for a kneebar! Jones looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Jones looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Jones!
McDonald is looking for a sweep.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Jones wants to clinch.

and McDonald decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Jones's guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as McDonald accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Morris McDonald overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

McDonald is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Jones is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

McDonald got a little sloppy there for a moment and Jones has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, McDonald has managed to get both his arms back between Jones's legs - danger averted.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

McDonald tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
McDonald fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

McDonald wants to control but instead Jones manages to regain half guard.

McDonald is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
Jones being controlled here, momentarily.
McDonald stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Jones swivels though and keeps the full guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Jones escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. McDonald gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Carl Jones has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
McDonald controls from within his opponent's guard.
Morris McDonald is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
McDonald looking to sit in guard and control but Jones gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Well McDonald has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
