PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Federico Molto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Genki Sodo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Federico Molto!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Genki Sodo!
The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Sosuke Kotani.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sodo fails with an attempt to clinch.
Molto tries to clinch up
and Molto takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Sodo fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Molto sprawls well initially but Sodo persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Sodo prevents Molto from standing back up.
Molto is pressing down on Sodo's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Molto is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Sodo dives into side control.

Sodo wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Molto, who protects the arm well.
Molto is looking to regain half guard here but Sodo keeps moving and retains side control.
Molto is trying to control Sodo's posture but Sodo avoids it.

Molto explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!

Molto darts in and clinches Sodo up against the cage.
Sodo keeps control of Molto as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Sodo breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Molto closes the distance but Sodo moves to the side
and Sodo counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Sodo is looking to clinch but Molto is avoiding it.
Sodo tries to close the distance and clinch up but Molto swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Molto decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Sodo pushes Molto off looking to stand but Molto dives back in and keeps control.

Sodo kicks off Molto and gets to his feet.
Sodo looks gassed!
Molto throws an overhand right that lands on Sodo's shoulder, as Sodo tries to avoid the shot.
Molto blocks a head kick by Sodo.
Molto tries to clinch up

and Sodo counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Sodo drops down looking for an ankle pick but Molto pulls his leg out and moves away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Molto pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

Molto fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Sodo, pushing him back against the cage.
Molto jumps guard but Sodo stands there with Molto around his waist. Molto gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Molto wants to get back to striking at distance but Sodo won't allow it.
Molto has had enough of the clinch but Sodo keeps him there for the moment.
Sodo tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Molto smiles and moves away.
Molto tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Sodo counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Molto tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Sodo counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Molto decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Molto wants to stand but his hand is trapped. Sodo uses the opportunity to regain full guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Sodo keeping moving, preventing Molto from controlling successfully.
Molto has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Molto preventing the sweep.
Sodo wants to stand up but Molto is controlling him.
Molto is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Molto gets to his feet. Sodo looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Molto misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Molto misses with a double jab.
Sodo misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Molto wants to clinch
and Sodo counters with a slapping leg kick.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Sodo keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

and Sodo counters by moving into the clinch.
Sodo tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Federico Molto has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Genki Sodo.
Molto wants to break free but Sodo has control.
Sodo prevents a takedown attempt there.
Molto tries to pull guard but Sodo holds him up against the cage and eventually Molto drops back down to his feet.

Molto is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Sodo gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Molto tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Sodo just stands there and leans against the cage.

A close round but Genki Sodo will probably get the nod.

Sodo throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Molto blocks it with crossed arms.
Molto has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Sodo avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Molto tries to pull guard but Sodo holds him up against the cage and eventually Molto drops back down to his feet.
Molto wants a takedown but no success here.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Federico Molto. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sodo has Molto pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Molto manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Molto jumps guard but Sodo stands there with Molto around his waist. Molto gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Molto has hold of one of Sodo's legs. Sodo is fighting the takedown attempt but Molto gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Molto is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Sodo is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Molto looking to sit in guard and control but Sodo gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Molto looks like he's trying to stand up.

Molto is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Sodo pulls his head out easily.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Sodo is trying to maintain a safe position but Molto gets an underhook and turns Sodo into the cage.
Molto tries for a takedown but Sodo manages to get underhooks.
Molto lands a left hand.

Sodo jumps into guard, dragging Molto to the mat.
Sodo wants to sweep here but Molto controlling him for the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Sodo chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Molto can pounce on him.

Sodo misses with the head strike.
Molto fails to pull guard.

Molto drags the fight down to the ground.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Federico Molto dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Molto has taken the fight to the clinch.
Sodo lands with a light punch inside.
Molto wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Molto wants a takedown.

Sodo turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Sodo manages to end up in side control.
Molto manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Sodo tries to clinch up but Molto circles away and keeps his distance.

and Sodo counters with a shoot takedown. Molto fights it but they end up in guard.

Molto is looking to sweep but instead, Sodo has passed into half guard.

Sodo is looking for a kimura but Molto is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Sodo to get the leverage.

Sodo is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Molto doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Sodo.

Sodo's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

and Sodo counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Molto!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Molto is looking to improve his position but Sodo isn't that keen on the idea.
Molto is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Genki Sodo comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Sodo has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
