PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Manuel Mendoza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Michael Heandler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mendoza's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Accept - Balls to the Wall. Heandler has chosen Theme as his entrance music. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Manuel Mendoza!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Michael Heandler!
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Mauricio Rocha and Seu Braga.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Mendoza breaks the clinch.
Mendoza really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Mendoza throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Heandler was covering up waiting for the punch and Mendoza finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Heandler controls Mendoza momentarily but Mendoza frees himself.

Mendoza stands up and waves to Heandler to follow him.

Mendoza clinches up against the cage.
Heandler tries a body shot but Mendoza blocks it.
Heandler trying to land knees to the body.

Mendoza breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Heandler tries for a takedown but Mendoza circles away easily

and Mendoza counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Heandler wants to sweep here but Mendoza controlling him for the moment.
Mendoza will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Mendoza postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mendoza controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Heandler looking to control.
Mendoza is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mendoza forces his way into half guard.

Mendoza is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Heandler connecting with a few gentle strikes.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Mendoza blocks the strikes from Heandler.
Mendoza controlling the action here.
Mendoza is pressing down on Heandler's thigh, looking to free his foot. Heandler is holding on for now.
Heandler is looking to control Mendoza's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Heandler avoid being mounted?
Heandler throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Mendoza fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Heandler sprawls well initially but Mendoza persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Heandler is trying to control but can't.
Mendoza is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Heandler trying to control from the bottom.
Mendoza controlling the action here.
Heandler wants to control but Mendoza is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Mendoza slows the pace down in half guard.
Heandler trying to hold on to Mendoza's head to control him but Mendoza postures up.
Heandler has hold of Mendoza's hands but Mendoza slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Mendoza blocks the strikes from Heandler.
Mendoza wants to stand up but Heandler is controlling the position.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Mendoza connects with a nice short shot to Heandler's temple.
Mendoza wants to get back to his feet.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Heandler takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
Heandler looks gassed!
Heandler misses with a takedown attempt

and Mendoza counters with a nice double leg into side control. Heandler won't be happy with that.
Mendoza remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Manuel Mendoza dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Heandler gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Heandler trying to keep a closed guard but Mendoza is proving a slippery customer.

Mendoza stands up and waves to Heandler to follow him.

Mendoza forces Heandler back against the cage and clinches.
Heandler is breathing heavily.
Heandler tries to throw a body punch but Mendoza avoids it by throwing Heandler back against the cage.

Mendoza lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Mendoza wants to get back to his feet.
Mendoza with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.

Mendoza is looking for a kimura here.
Heandler trying to hold on to Mendoza's head to control him but Mendoza postures up.
Mendoza wants to free his trapped foot but Heandler is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Heandler trying to control but Mendoza postures up.
Mendoza knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Heandler on the ground.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Mendoza fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Heandler, pushing him back against the cage.
Mendoza tries to score a body lock takedown but Heandler shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Mendoza is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Mendoza tries to pull guard but Heandler won't allow it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Manuel Mendoza. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Mendoza breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Mendoza goes for a high kick. It partially lands.

Mendoza throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Heandler was covering up waiting for the punch and Mendoza finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Heandler is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Heandler is working an open guard so Mendoza takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Mendoza connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.

Mendoza feints and as Heandler raises his hands in defense, Mendoza changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Mendoza has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Mendoza wanted to stand there but Heandler had control of the position.

Mendoza gets to his feet - Heandler follows without any prompting.
Mendoza fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.

Mendoza fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Heandler, pushing him back against the cage.
Mendoza is working Heandler over against the cage.
Mendoza landing some nice looking knees to the body.

Mendoza gets control of Heandler's arms and successfully pulls guard. Mendoza will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Mendoza pulls Heandler in close to prevent any damage.

Mendoza had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Heandler defends it easily.
Mendoza wants to sweep but no luck.
Manuel Mendoza overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Mendoza manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Heandler swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Mendoza takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Manuel Mendoza dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!



Mendoza looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Mendoza blocks the strikes from Heandler.
Ground and pound from Mendoza.
Mendoza seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Mendoza tries to pass to full mount but Heandler defends it.
Heandler throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Mendoza content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Heandler takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Heandler tries to roll over but Mendoza keeps him under control.
Heandler missing with punches from the bottom.
Mendoza wants to pass the guard but Heandler is defending well.
Heandler wants to control but Mendoza is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Mendoza moves into the clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Heandler tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Mendoza works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Mendoza postures up.
Mendoza is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Mendoza lands a couple of digs.
Mendoza slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Heandler doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Mendoza with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Heandler wants to control the position but Mendoza says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Well, if Mendoza is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Mendoza decides to return to a standing position.

Mendoza bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Mendoza tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Mendoza has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Heandler can't do much from the bottom here.
Michael Heandler has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mendoza is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Heandler will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Mendoza has control of an arm but Heandler manages to advance to Mendoza's back!
Mendoza rolls, trying to escape but Heandler keeps control of the position.

Heandler looking for the choke from the back.
Mendoza is trying to stand back up.
Mendoza is defending well here and trying to improve his position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Manuel Mendoza showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Mendoza has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
