PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Zach Parise (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jim Smithers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Smithers is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Metallica - No Leaf Clover. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Zach Parise!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Jim Smithers!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Trevor Gratis and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Parise throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Smithers.
Smithers shoots for a double leg takedown but Parise sprawls well. He's pushed Smithers's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
The fight stays on the outside here - Smithers looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Smithers tries to clinch there but Parise circles away.

Smithers feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Smithers lands a couple of decent looking shots.

Smithers drops back, looking for a kneebar! Parise looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Parise looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Parise!

Parise tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Parise has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Smithers changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Parise looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Parise is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Smithers accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Smithers drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Smithers jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

and Smithers counters by moving into the clinch.

Parise escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Parise cracks Smithers with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Smithers looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

and Smithers counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Parise!

Parise takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.

Smithers is trying to maintain a safe position but Parise gets an underhook and turns Smithers into the cage.

Smithers will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Parise up against the cage.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Smithers lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Parise takes one to the side of the head.
Smithers shoots in but no luck this time.

Smithers shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Smithers was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Smithers is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Parise to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Parise shrugs it off.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Smithers looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Parise with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Parise lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.

I think Smithers has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
