The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bannister shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in McDermott's guard. Bannister loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Bannister trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Bannister postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. McDermott seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. Bannister trying to stand up but can't free himself from McDermott's guard. Bannister has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Bannister gets the takedown into side control. The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Bannister tries to close the distance and clinch up but McDermott swats him away and circles back towards the center. McDermott with a lazy takedown attempt and Bannister counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. McDermott is breathing heavily. Bannister working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Bannister trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Bannister is stalling in the full guard. Bannister's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. McDermott throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

Bannister sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed McDermott's guard. Bannister moves nicely into side control. Bannister tries to advance to mount but McDermott denies him. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. McDermott looking to control but Bannister is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Bannister tries to hold on but McDermott postures up.
