PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Xavier Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brad Nelson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gracie comes to the ring accompanied by Powerman 5000 - Drop The Bombshell. Nelson has chosen Black Flood Diesel - Lost Cause as his entrance music. Xavier Gracie has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Xavier Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Brad Nelson!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Chris Edwards and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Nelson shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Gracie napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Nelson trying to control the position but Gracie is working away.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Nelson tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Gracie tries to bench press Nelson off him but Nelson keeps the position.
Gracie regains half guard.
Nelson takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Gracie trying to hold on to Nelson's head to control him but Nelson postures up.
Gracie won't allow Nelson to pass to mount.

Nelson is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Nelson is trying to control the action in half guard but Gracie is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Nelson wants to advance to full mount but Gracie doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.
Gracie avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Gracie keeping moving, preventing Nelson from controlling successfully.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Gracie will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Gracie scores with a shot to the body.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Nelson changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Gracie tries to avoid it but Nelson manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Gracie to the ground. Gracie escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Nelson closes this distance looking for a takedown but Gracie circles away.
Xavier Gracie is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Nelson moves out of range as Gracie strikes.
Nelson shoots for a takedown but Gracie saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Xavier Gracie has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Brad Nelson.
Nelson looks gassed!

Nelson throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Gracie was covering up waiting for the punch and Nelson finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Gracie is trying to keep Nelson in close.
Gracie wants to sweep here but Nelson controlling him for the moment.

Nelson has gone for a leg lock! Gracie slips out almost immediately though and dives into Nelson's guard.
Gracie seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Nelson looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Gracie passes into half guard.
Nelson has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gracie is working away from the top position though.

Gracie trying to mount his opponent but Nelson defends it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Gracie is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Gracie thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Nelson's head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Xavier Gracie will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Nelson closes the distance and clinches up with Gracie, looking for a takedown. Nelson pushes Gracie against the ropes but Gracie circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Gracie keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Gracie rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Nelson moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Gracie missing with a left hand there. Nelson was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Nelson fails with a takedown attempt.

Nelson controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Nelson wants to control from the top but Gracie keeps moving.

Nelson is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Nelson is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Gracie sees it coming and defends easily.

Gracie is refusing to be controlled, as Nelson sits in half guard.
Gracie is trying to maintain the position but Nelson is very close to passing his half guard.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Nelson in particular looking to stall.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Nelson shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Gracie but Gracie pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Xavier Gracie has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Brad Nelson.
Nelson uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Gracie.

Nelson gets a takedown into half guard.
Nelson seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Gracie does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Nelson wants to work for an arm triangle but Gracie is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Nelson looking for a submission but Gracie manages to get full guard, putting an end to that submission attempt.

Nelson drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Gracie manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Nelson has Gracie in his guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Gracie is pushing down on Nelson's leg trying to pass to half guard. Nelson is fighting to maintain full guard but Gracie has managed to sneak the leg through.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brad Nelson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Nelson shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Gracie as he jumps to the side.
Nelson takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Nelson fails to land the takedown.
Nelson looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Xavier Gracie has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Brad Nelson.
Nelson takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Gracie connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Nelson's hands.
Nelson closes this distance looking for a takedown but Gracie circles away.
Nelson bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Gracie lunges at Nelson with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Nelson's hand.

That's one minute gone in the round.
No joy there for Gracie, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Nelson uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Gracie.
Nelson doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Gracie fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Nelson shoots in and drives through. Gracie sprawls well.
Gracie is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Nelson.
Nelson throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gracie's waist but Gracie gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Nelson off to one side.
Gracie swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
A looping hook to the body misses from Gracie. Nelson does a little dance to reset his feet.
Brad Nelson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gracie throws a nice looking combination but Nelson bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
A big left from Gracie misses.

Nelson shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Gracie waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Nelson.

Nelson fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Nelson ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

Gracie regains half guard, as Nelson was trying to land strikes.

Gracie won't allow Nelson to pass to mount.
Nelson is looking to pass Gracie's guard but actually Gracie recovers to full guard.

Gracie working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Nelson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Nelson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Nelson drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Gracie dives on top into guard.

Nelson is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Gracie defends well.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Nelson being controlled here, momentarily.
Gracie throwing strikes from guard but Nelson blocks nicely.
Gracie trying to control the position from guard on top but Nelson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Gracie is looking to advance position but Nelson has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Xavier Gracie showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Gracie has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
