PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Chris Villar (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marcelo Riviera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Villar comes to the cage accompanied by Deuces. Riviera has chosen Ludacris - Act a fool as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Chris Villar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Marcelo Riviera!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A left and a right from Riviera both land. Nice combination.

Riviera drives through and clinches with Villar against the cage.

Riviera pulls guard effortlessly.
Riviera strikes from his own guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Villar throwing strikes but missing.
Riviera lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Villar!
Riviera controlling the pace for now.
I looks like Riviera might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Villar might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Let's hope that Riviera has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Marcelo Riviera wasn't active enough on the ground.
Riviera tries to clinch up but Villar circles away and keeps his distance.
Horrible takedown by Villar or perhaps it was just good defense by Riviera which made him look bad.
Riviera fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Villar on the side of the head.
Villar shoots in looking for a takedown but Riviera manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Villar's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Riviera plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Villar wants to clinch up but Riviera keeps it at a distance.
Villar circles away from the clinch attempt.
Riviera just misses with a punch to the body.
Riviera stuffs the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Chris Villar. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Riviera is looking to clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Marcelo Riviera dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Villar shoots in but Riviera avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Villar dives in and grabs Riviera's left leg, looking for a takedown. Riviera pushes down on Villar's head and hops out.
Villar tries to bum rush Riviera with a series of wild strikes but Riviera uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Villar darts in trying to clinch
and Riviera counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Villar misses with a takedown attempt

and Riviera counters with a takedown into side control.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Chris Villar. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Riviera controlling the position from side mount.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Riviera has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Riviera looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Riviera is thwarting Villar's attempts to control the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Riviera content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Marcelo Riviera showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Villar fails with the takedown

and Riviera counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Riviera.

Villar tightens his grip and picks Riviera up, before dumping him to the ground. Riviera manages to land in guard.
Riviera manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Riviera controlling the pace for now.

That's one minute gone in the round.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Villar wants to hold on but Riviera pushes him away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Riviera controlling from mount.
Chris Villar has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

And that's the end of the fight!
Marcelo Riviera comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Riviera has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
