PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Doran Connell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Skippy McGee (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Connell comes to the cage accompanied by Rob Kelly - Rockstar. Skippy McGee told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Doran Connell! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Skippy McGee! The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Winston Howard and Damien Edna.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! The fight stays on the outside here - Connell looks like he's thinking about clinching though. McGee misses with a body shot.
McGee shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Connell as he avoids it easily. Connell throws a head kick that misses. McGee takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness. McGee shoots in looking for a takedown. Connell tries to sprawl out of it but McGee keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Connell manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. McGee tries to close the distance and clinch but Connell swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. McGee closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Connell is working to avoid the ground and pound but McGee connects with a decent elbow. Connell prevents McGee from improving position. McGee trying to control the action but Connell is working from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. McGee throws an elbow but Connell slips to the side and avoids it well. McGee swings around for an armbar but Connell sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into McGee's guard. McGee keeping moving, preventing Connell from controlling successfully. Connell drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Connell jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Connell stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McGee swivels though and keeps the full guard. Connell has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Connell trying to control but McGee is working from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Connell postures up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. McGee circles away from the clinch attempt and McGee counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Connell! Connell is working to get back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Connell wants to control but McGee is having none of it. McGee with some aggressive grappling here, looking for the finish.
McGee throwing strikes here but Connell is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
McGee postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Connell looks a forlorn figure.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Connell is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. McGee looking to finish Connell with some ground and pound. This is bad for Connell! BOOM! McGee connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Connell slips a leg in and gets back to half guard. McGee is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Connell trying to hold on to McGee's head to control him but McGee postures up.
Connell keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Skippy McGee dominated that round. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Connell wants to clinch and McGee counters with a shoot takedown. Connell fights it but they end up in guard. McGee gets to his feet. Connell looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Connell moves into the clinch successfully.
Connell comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush. McGee is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Connell gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt. Connell gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head. McGee has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Connell is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. Connell using the Thai plumb to throw knees but McGee has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Connell creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses. McGee tries to circle away but Connell has him pinned against the cage. With the two fighters working up against the cage, Connell just misses with a elbow thrown towards McGee's brow. McGee pulls guard successfully.
Connell slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Connell is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but McGee is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Connell swings around for an armbar but McGee sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Connell's guard. McGee throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Connell works some decent striking defense from the bottom. McGee trying to control but Connell is working from the bottom. McGee stands up from guard. Let's bang! Connell blocks a head kick by McGee.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Connell keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Connell darts in trying to clinch and McGee counters with a nice double leg into half guard. McGee winds up and cracks Connell with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Connell wants to control but McGee is keeping busy.
Connell is not content to let McGee control the position. McGee wants to pass the guard but Connell is defending well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Connell moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Connell is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Connell stalling away here and it's allowed McGee to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard. Connell tries to free his leg and advance position but McGee is retaining full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Connell trying to control but McGee is working from the bottom. Connell pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. McGee is keeping the position for now. Connell drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and McGee dives on top into guard. McGee throws a big right hand that misses. McGee makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. McGee trying to control but Connell is working from the bottom. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Skippy McGee showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

McGee jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Connell walks away with a smile on his face. McGee gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Doran Connell has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Skippy McGee. McGee throws a sloppy head kick and Connell moves out of range easily. Connell tries to clinch but McGee is having none of it. Connell goes for a high kick. It partially lands. Connell closes the distance looking to clinch so McGee counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. McGee takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Connell is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
That's one minute gone in the round. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as McGee accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Connell working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because McGee has passed into half guard!
McGee passes to full mount! McGee misses with a head shot. Doran Connell has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Connell has given up his back here.
McGee just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.
Connell trying to control the position but McGee manages to sink in the hooks. McGee has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Connell tries to roll but McGee sticks to his back.

That's three minutes gone in the round. McGee has his opponent trapped and is landing shots. Not a good position for Connell. McGee is working for the choke. I would put my money on him to finish from this position. He's rolled onto his back and has dragged Connell with him. Connell is trying to defend but McGee has an arm under the chin now! Connell grimaces and is forced to tap out!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:29 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Skippy McGee!
