PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Quinton Jackson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cain Velasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jackson has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Quinton Jackson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Cain Velasquez! The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Ivan Kurochkin and Aleksei Zolotukhin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Oooh a lovely combination from Velasquez sends Jackson down but not out. Velasquez dives into side control looking to finish.
Jackson is rocked!
It looks like Quinton Jackson has been cut. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Velasquez decides to stand back up. Oh Jackson is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! Wow, both these guys are really going for it! Jackson is breathing heavily. Velasquez moves into range and clinches up with Jackson. Jackson seems to have got his legs back now. Velasquez escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Jackson misses with an attempted mid kick.
Velasquez lands a nice hook to Jackson's body. Jackson takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes. Velasquez drives through and clinches with Jackson against the cage.
Velasquez gets control of Jackson's arms and successfully pulls guard. Velasquez will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back. Velasquez looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Jackson postures up.
Velasquez looking for a sweep. Not yet Velasquez, not yet. Velasquez not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Velasquez bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Jackson's guard. Jackson keeping moving, preventing Velasquez from controlling successfully. Velasquez might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Jackson kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
That's one minute gone in the round.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Cain Velasquez was stalling too much, according to the referee. Jackson shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it. Velasquez keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Jackson. Velasquez lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Jab, jab by Velasquez - just one landing. A combination from Velasquez does no damage. Jackson drops his hands momentarily and Velasquez takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head. This has been an exciting period of action! Velasquez drops his shoulder and cracks Jackson with a huge uppercut! Jackson goes down! Can Velasquez finish him?
Velasquez looking to pass the guard. Velasquez trying to control the position from guard on top but Jackson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Velasquez forces his way into half guard. Velasquez wants to take a breather but Jackson is having none of it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Velasquez missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Velasquez trying to mount his opponent but Jackson defends it. Nice strikes from Velasquez there. Velasquez is looking to take a break and control but Jackson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Velasquez seems to be working for a kimura but Jackson defends the submission attempt. Jackson is staying active underneath Velasquez, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Cain Velasquez was stalling too much, according to the referee. Velasquez cracks Jackson with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage. Nice combo by Velasquez! Oh, that's hurt him - Jackson falls to the canvas and Velasquez follows him into side control. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Velasquez is looking to take a break and control but Jackson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Velasquez works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Velasquez is putting a hurting on Jackson here, landing some big shots from side control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Velasquez wants to lay and pray for a moment but Jackson keeps working. Velasquez in side control lands a decent elbow. Jackson taking a bit of punishment here - Velasquez scoring with strikes. Velasquez working the body and head with strikes. Jackson could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Velasquez trying to control the action but Jackson is working from the bottom. Velasquez stands up and we're back to a striking position. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Velasquez doesn't manage to clinch there - Jackson circles away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Cain Velasquez dominated that round. The cut man is working on Quinton Jackson's cut. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Velasquez fakes a head shot and lands one to the body. Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Velasquez!
Jackson get stunned by a cross and takes another one on the button. Jackson stumbles backwards and tries to bounce back off the cage but Velasquez runs in and jumps on him with a leaping lead hook that puts him out! Wow, that was highlight reel stuff! Awesome finish!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:10 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Cain Velasquez!
