PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Assis Civita (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jebediah Reed (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Reed is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Eighties. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Assis Civita!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Jebediah Reed!
The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, William Peck and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Reed misses with an uppercut
and Reed takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Reed throws a poor cross that misses
and Civita connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Reed tries to keep at a distance but Civita has taken the fight into the clinch.
Civita is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Reed gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Civita tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Reed working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.

Civita manages to pull guard.
Civita is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Reed trying to control the position from guard on top but Civita is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Civita is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Reed working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Civita's head.
Civita is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Civita winds up and cracks Reed with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Civita is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Reed sees it coming and defends easily.
Civita has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Civita missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Reed is looking to escape.
Civita wants to pass to mount but Reed is defending the position.

Civita looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Reed manages to escape and get back to his feet!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Reed scores with a jab. Civita acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Reed misses with a looping right.
Reed ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Civita moves away.
Civita tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Reed counters with a straight right hand.

Civita shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Civita wants to advance to full mount but Reed doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Civita trying to control the position from guard on top but Reed is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Reed wants to stand and escape but Civita is having none of it.
Civita looking to pass the guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Civita trying to move into half guard but instead Reed has managed to sweep!
Civita is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Civita is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Reed is aware though and is defending well.
Civita is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Civita is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Civita seems to be working for a kimura but Reed defends the submission attempt.

Civita is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Reed doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Civita.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Assis Civita dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Reed misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Reed throws a left and a right that both miss

and Civita counters with a single leg into guard. Reed didn't expect that.

Civita is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Reed is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Reed has escaped and now he's on top!
Reed controlling from the top position.
Civita seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Reed is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

Civita is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Civita looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

Civita is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Reed defends it well.
Civita trying to advance position but Reed counters by regaining guard.

Civita is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Reed is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Reed has escaped and now he's on top!

Civita lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Reed!
Civita looking to control but Reed is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Reed tries to buck Civita off but he can't manage it.
Civita throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Reed because Civita loaded up on that one.
Reed prevents Civita from taking his back.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Reed wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Civita.
Civita looking to ground and pound but Reed is blocking nicely.
Reed has worked his way to half guard, taking advantage of Civita's lack of action.

Civita is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Civita not landing any meaningful shots this time.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Civita wants to control but Reed is keeping him busy.

Civita is trying to work for a kimura but Reed is defending well.
Civita is stalling here. Reed is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Civita seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Reed has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
Reed lands a nice forearm strike.
Check out the look on Reed's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Civita is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Civita wants to control but Reed is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Reed thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Civita's head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Assis Civita will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Reed throws a right hand that misses

and Civita decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Reed's guard.
Assis Civita overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Civita has gone for a leg lock! Reed slips out almost immediately though and dives into Civita's guard.
Reed trying to control the position from guard on top but Civita is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Reed stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Civita swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Reed got a little sloppy there for a moment and Civita has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Reed has managed to get both his arms back between Civita's legs - danger averted.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Reed's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Civita manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Civita swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Reed is now in Civita's guard. A big mistake from Civita there, giving up the dominant position!

Civita keeping moving, preventing Reed from controlling successfully.
Civita is trying to keep Reed in close.
Reed trying to control the position from guard on top but Civita is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Civita wants to sweep but no luck.
Civita looking to control.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Reed closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Civita jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Reed walks away with a smile on his face. Civita gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Civita is trying hard to land a takedown here. Reed sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Jebediah Reed is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
A jab lands there for Reed.
Reed throws a right hand that misses

and Civita decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Reed's guard.
Civita pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Reed is keeping the position for now.

Civita has gone for a leg lock! Reed slips out almost immediately though and dives into Civita's guard.

Civita keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Reed wants to take a breather but Civita is having none of it.
Reed slips a nice elbow through Civita's hands, connecting with Civita's forehead.
Civita is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Civita regains full guard. Nicely done.
Assis Civita is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Civita manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Civita goes for an armbar but Reed turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Reed.
Reed with a flurry of punches that miss.
Jebediah Reed has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Civita is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Civita is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Reed is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Reed postures up and lands a big shot to Civita's brow.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Assis Civita.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Civita, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
