PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jon Starsmore (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mordechai Marx (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jon Starsmore!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mordechai Marx!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Starsmore closes the distance and clinches up with Marx, looking for a takedown. Starsmore pushes Marx against the ropes but Marx circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Starsmore misses with a head kick.
Marx throws an off balance right hand
and Starsmore counters with a solid body kick.
Marx misses with an uppercut

and Starsmore counters with a shoot takedown. Marx fights it but they end up in guard.
Starsmore stopping the sweep attempt from Marx.

Marx working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Starsmore doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Starsmore manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Marx working for a triangle but Starsmore defends it easily.
Starsmore knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Marx on the ground.

Marx looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Marx looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Marx is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Marx has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Starsmore can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Starsmore preventing the sweep.
Starsmore is looking to work some ground and pound but Marx has wrist control.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Marx is on top in guard.
Marx advances position into side control!

Marx wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Starsmore, who protects the arm well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Marx decides to stand up, so the ref orders Starsmore to his feet.
Starsmore keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Marx misses with an uppercut

and Starsmore counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Marx has his foot on Starsmore's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Starsmore works his way back into a safe position though.
Starsmore has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Marx can't keep his opponent in guard - Starsmore advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Marx looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Marx is in trouble now - Starsmore has advanced to mount!
Marx tries to hold on but Starsmore postures up.
Marx working to try and regain half guard.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Marx tries to hold on but Starsmore pushes him away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Starsmore dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


A big left from Marx misses.
Marx moves into range and connects with a jab.
Marx jabs Starsmore right on the nose. Starsmore blinks but takes it well.
Marx throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Marx throws a sloppy head kick and Starsmore moves out of range easily.
Marx takes a swing at Starsmore's ribcage but misses.
Marx throws an off balance right hand

and Starsmore counters with a nice double leg into side control. Marx won't be happy with that.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Marx is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Starsmore off and has taken his back!

Marx working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Marx is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Starsmore knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Starsmore for a finish.

Marx is persistently looking for the submission but Starsmore is defending it well.

Marx patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here?

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Marx looking to break Starsmore's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Starsmore remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Marx will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

Marx is working for the choke. He's slipped one arm under the chin. Starsmore has to defend the other arm for all he's worth... but Marx has managed to get that arm free too and he's tightening the choke! Starsmore taps out and looks absolutely disgusted with himself. Marx doesn't care though - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:30 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Mordechai Marx!
