PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Marcos Calvacante (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chris Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Calvacante comes into the arena with Indestructible-Disturbed blaring out of the sound system. Gracie has chosen Trivium- pull harder on the strings of your martyr as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Marcos Calvacante!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Chris Gracie!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Leandro Rodrigues and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gracie shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gracie content just to control the position here.
Gracie in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
Calvacante is looking to improve his position but Gracie isn't that keen on the idea.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Calvacante keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Gracie avoids the attempt from Calvacante to control.

Gracie looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Calvacante is squirming around, avoiding Gracie's attempts to control the action.

Calvacante tries to hold on but Gracie pushes him away.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Calvacante has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gracie is working away from the top position though.
Gracie thows a huge punch but Calvacante dodges it nicely.
Gracie wants to pass the guard but Calvacante is defending well.
Calvacante wants to control but Gracie is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Calvacante wants to get back to full guard.

Gracie decides to stand and escape the position.
Gracie throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.

Calvacante tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Gracie shoots in and bounces Calvacante off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Calvacante gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Gracie counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Calvacante's guard now.

Gracie stands and steps away. Calvacante gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Gracie decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Calvacante, up you get!

The fight stays on the outside here - Calvacante looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Calvacante has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Gracie can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Gracie not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Gracie passes Calvacante's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Calvacante wants to get back to full guard but Gracie has passed into side control.
Chris Gracie has got the better of the ground game so far.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
A nice elbow there by Gracie.
Calvacante is working to get back to half guard.

Gracie get's back to his feet.
Gracie thows a body kick. Calvacante tries to catch it but that hurt him.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Calvacante crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Gracie - the referee stops the clock and Calvacante gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Gracie. Calvacante manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Gracie closes the distance and clinches.
Calvacante tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Gracie smiles and moves away.
Gracie has a takedown stuffed.
Chris Gracie seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Nice sprawl there from Gracie as Calvacante shoots in.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chris Gracie showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Calvacante moves in looking to clinch but Gracie pushes him off.
Calvacante shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Gracie as he avoids it easily.
Calvacante tries to clinch up.
Calvacante fails with the takedown

and Gracie counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Gracie stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Calvacante to get to his feet.
Calvacante tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Gracie counters with a nice double leg into side control. Calvacante won't be happy with that.
Gracie has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Gracie is giving the impression that he's looking to ground and pound but he switches suddenly into a beautiful far side armbar! Calvacante is forced to tap! Great finish!
