Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Martin Francisco! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Tom Methven! The judges for this bout are , and Jack Bonds.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Methven. Francisco looking to score a takedown here. Methven is defending well but Francisco drives through and ends up in Methven's guard. Francisco drops back, looking for a kneebar! Methven looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Methven looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Methven! Methven connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Francisco some visible discomfort.
Francisco dodges the ground and pound from Methven. Methven has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Francisco is not in a great position here, taking some shots. Francisco on the wrong end of some ground and pound. Francisco is working to avoid the ground and pound but Methven connects with a decent elbow. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Francisco can't do much from the bottom here. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Francisco is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Methven off and has taken his back! We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Methven manages to reverse the position and now he's in Francisco's guard. Nice work there by Methven.
Methven tries to free his leg and advance position but Francisco is retaining full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Methven accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Francisco knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Methven on the ground. Methven passes Francisco's left leg - he's now in half guard. Methven is figuring out what he wants to do next. Francisco trying to control but Methven postures up.
Francisco avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Methven. Methven trying to control the action but Francisco is working from the bottom. Methven is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Nice strikes from Methven there. Methven decides to return to a standing position. Francisco tries to clinch and Methven counters by clinching up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Methven gets a nice trip takedown into half guard. Methven seems to be working for a kimura but Francisco defends the submission attempt. Francisco is breathing heavily. Methven is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Francisco defends it well. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Methven connects with a nice short shot to Francisco's temple. Francisco on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. Francisco missing with punches from the bottom.
Francisco is trying to stand back up but Methven is controlling him
Methven takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Methven lands with a punch from half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Methven looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Methven passes to side control. Methven scoring with punches and elbows. Methven landing a few strikes. Check out the look on Methven's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Francisco being controlled for a moment. Methven tries for a kimura but Francisco is defending well. Methven creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Methven working the ground and pound. Francisco takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better. Francisco takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Methven lands an elbow.
Francisco is rocked! Methven cracks Francisco with an elbow. That is naaassty. Oh Francisco is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Methven has hold of Francisco's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Francisco seems comfortable defending it but Methven has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Francisco is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Francisco is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Methven couldn't care less - he's delighted!
