PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Leon Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hiroshi Guy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hughes kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Hear Me Now. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Leon Hughes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hiroshi Guy!
The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Guy has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Hughes is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Hughes is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Guy can't fight it off and eventually Hughes manages to take the fight to the floor. Guy looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Guy looking for a sweep. Not yet Guy, not yet.

Hughes drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Hughes jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Hughes wants to control from the top but Guy keeps moving.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Leon Hughes.
Hughes keeps the fight on the outside.
Hughes closes the distance looking to clinch

so Guy counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Hughes looking to hit a scissor sweep but Guy is one step ahead there.
Hughes wants to get back to his feet but Guy is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Guy pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Hughes is keeping the position for now.

Guy tries to free his leg and advance position but Hughes is retaining full guard.
Guy postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Hughes holds on and takes a little breather.
Guy must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Hughes has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The ref stands the fighters back up because Leon Hughes just wasn't active enough.

Guy clinches.

Guy tries for a takedown. No joy.

Guy breaks from the clinch.

Guy clinches up with Hughes and pushes him back against the cage.

Guy gets control of Hughes's arms and successfully pulls guard. Guy will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Guy has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Hughes has passed into side control.
Guy manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Hughes is looking for a kimura but Guy is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Hughes to get the leverage.
Guy wants to improve his position but Hughes is controlling well.
Hughes is trying to control the action in half guard but Guy is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Guy kicks Hughes off and gets back to his feet.
Guy shoots in looking for a takedown. Hughes tries to sprawl out of it but Guy keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Hughes manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Leon Hughes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Hiroshi Guy.
Hughes keeps the fight on the outside.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Hughes throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Guy on the side of the head.
Guy stuffs the takedown.
Hughes is breathing heavily.

Guy moves into the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Hiroshi Guy will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Guy closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Hughes gets full guard.
Hughes is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Guy wants to control but Hughes is keeping busy.
Hughes is looking to take a break and control but Guy is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Hughes is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Guy is looking for a sweep. Hughes is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Guy wants to sweep but Hughes has passed to side control!
Guy can't do much from the bottom here.
Guy is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Hughes off and has taken his back!
Guy throws a big right hand but he misses and hits the mat. Ouch.
Guy is controlling the position but Hughes somehow manages to roll and ends up with half guard.
Hughes is looking to control Guy's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Hughes avoid being mounted?

Guy wants to free his trapped foot but Hughes is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Hughes is trying to maintain the position but Guy is very close to passing his half guard.

Guy is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Hughes doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Guy.
Hughes tries to get to full guard but Guy has control of the leg.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Well, if Guy is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Let's hope that Guy has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Hiroshi Guy was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Guy misses with a straight right.
Guy shoots in but Hughes avoids the takedown attempt easily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Hughes throws a sloppy head kick and Guy moves out of range easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hiroshi Guy showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Guy shoots in for a takedown but Hughes shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Hughes moves in looking to clinch but Guy pushes him off.
Hughes wants to clinch.
Hughes misses with a kick to the body.
Hughes throws a wild body kick that Guy sees coming a mile off.
Hughes is looking to score with low kicks.
Guy fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Guy lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Hughes backs up against the cage.
Hughes tries to clinch there but Guy circles away.

Hughes gets tackled into the cage by Guy. Guy maintains the clinch.

Hughes blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Guy tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Leon Hughes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Hiroshi Guy.
Hughes misses with a hook from the clinch.
Guy tries to land knees in the clinch but Hughes avoids the damage to the body.
Hughes is pressed up against the cage. Guy has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Hughes down to the mat. Hughes avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Guy takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Hughes throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Guy.
Hughes lands a jab-cross combination.


It looks like Hiroshi Guy has been cut.
Hughes works over Guy's head and body with a nice combination.
Hughes tries to clinch there but Guy circles away.

Hughes feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Hiroshi Guy has got the better of the ground game so far.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Hughes wants to control from the top but Guy keeps moving.

Guy will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Leon Hughes wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Hughes tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Guy counters with a nice double leg into side control. Hughes won't be happy with that.
Hughes gets back to half guard.
Guy wants to lay and pray for a moment but Hughes keeps working.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Guy stops Hughes from getting back to his feet.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Hiroshi Guy.

Guy fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Hughes, pushing him back against the cage.

Guy is trying to trip Hughes. He has hold of a leg but Hughes is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Guy persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Hughes keeping moving, preventing Guy from controlling successfully.
Leon Hughes has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Hughes wants to get back to his feet but Guy is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Hiroshi Guy is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

I would just about give that final round to Hiroshi Guy.
I've got Guy winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
