PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Lewis Wood (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rey Jericho (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Jericho's choice of entrance music: Creedence Clearwater Revival: Fortunate Son. Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Lewis Wood!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Rey Jericho!
The judges for this bout are Saam Ante, Wagner Zegers and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wood takes the fight into the clinch.

Jericho wants the takedown. Wood is fighting it off but Jericho persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Wood's guard against the cage.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Jericho makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Jericho throwing strikes but missing.
Wood wants to stand and escape but Jericho is having none of it.
Jericho postures up in Wood's guard and throws a big left but Wood blocks it.
Jericho stands up over Wood, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Jericho is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Jericho looking to sit in guard and control but Wood gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Wood trying to control but Jericho is working from the bottom.

Wood working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Rey Jericho was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Jericho closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Wood works his way to full guard. Good work.
Jericho won't allow Wood to get back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jericho postures up and lands a big shot to Wood's brow.
Jericho chips away with some ground and pound.

Jericho gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Wood gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Jericho to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Jericho throws a strike but Wood rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Jericho kicks Wood off and gets to his feet.
Wood shoots in and drives through. Jericho sprawls well.
Jericho gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Wood counters with a single leg into guard. Jericho didn't expect that.

Wood drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Jericho dives on top into guard.
Jericho in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Jericho trying to control the position from guard on top but Wood is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Wood is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Jericho gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Jericho is looking for a kimura but Wood is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Jericho to get the leverage.
Jericho stalling.
Wood tries to get to full guard but Jericho has control of the leg.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Jericho stops Wood from getting back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rey Jericho dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Nice sprawl there from Wood as Jericho shoots in.
Wood tries to close the distance and clinch but Jericho swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Wood fails in his attempt to clinch.
Jericho keeps the fight on the outside.

Jericho shoots in for a double leg but Wood sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Jericho looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Jericho wants a takedown.
Lewis Wood has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rey Jericho.

Wood pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Rey Jericho seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Wood gets caught napping as Jericho dives in and scores a takedown. Wood manages to retain guard.

Wood utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Wood tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Jericho postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Jericho gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Jericho shoots for a double leg takedown but Wood sprawls well. He's pushed Jericho's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Wood changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Jericho tries to avoid it but Wood manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Jericho to the ground. Jericho escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

and Jericho decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Wood's guard.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Jericho makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Jericho lands a couple of decent looking shots.

Jericho postures up and lands a big shot to Wood's brow.

Jericho keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Wood's head.
Jericho distracts Wood with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Wood on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Wood tries to get out of the position.

Jericho is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Jericho lands a couple of digs.
Wood working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Jericho.

Jericho wants to work for an arm triangle but Wood is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Rey Jericho has got the better of the ground game so far.
Jericho is nestled in close to Wood, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Jericho wants to pass to mount but Wood is defending the position.
Wood regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Jericho.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Jericho's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Jericho must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Jericho postures up in Wood's guard and throws a big left but Wood blocks it.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Jericho accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rey Jericho showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Jericho drops back, looking for a kneebar! Wood looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Wood looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Wood!

Jericho keeps Wood under control for a moment.
Jericho is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
You can see the frustration on Jericho's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Jericho parries the strikes from Wood easily there. Wood is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Jericho to escape.

Wood tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Wood misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Jericho sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Wood prevents Jericho from improving his position.

Wood throws a strike but Jericho avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

Jericho pushes Wood off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Jericho darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Jericho takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Wood is staying active underneath Jericho, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Wood is trying to get back to full guard.

Rey Jericho is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Jericho wants to take a breather but Wood is having none of it.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Rey Jericho.

The referee warns Wood that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

Rey Jericho comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Jericho has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
