Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
20 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Alex Burkhart! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Robert Handel! The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, Colin Fotheringham and Paul Tew.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Handel stuffs the takedown. Handel throws a head kick but Burkhart moves out of range.
Burkhart shoots in for a takedown but Handel shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Burkhart. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Alex Burkhart. That's going to take a lot out of him. Handel blocks a head kick by Burkhart.
Burkhart shoots in looking for a takedown. Handel tries to sprawl out of it but Burkhart keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Handel manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Handel stuffs the takedown. Burkhart looks for a takedown but Handel sprawls well. Burkhart will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
That's one minute gone in the round. Burkhart pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Handel back to the cage. Burkhart follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver. Handel fails with an attempt to clinch.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Burkhart. Alex Burkhart seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Handel tries to clinch up. Handel is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Burkhart shoots for a takedown but Handel saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Handel uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Burkhart. Handel tries to clinch but Burkhart moves away and Burkhart decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Handel's guard. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Handel is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Burkhart defends well. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Handel can do anything to dispel that myth.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Burkhart landing some decent shots from guard. Burkhart slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Handel is striking but Burkhart is not phased and passes to half guard. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Burkhart in particular looking to stall. Burkhart is trying for a kimura here. Handel looks like he's in a lot of pain... and he's tapping out! Burkhart wins by kimura!
