The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Wheeliams dives in and grabs Brown's left leg, looking for a takedown. Brown pushes down on Wheeliams's head and hops out. Wheeliams is trying hard to land a takedown here. Brown sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Brown lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Brown leaves Wheeliams with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Derown Wheeliams. That's going to take a lot out of him. Wheeliams shoots in but Brown avoids the takedown attempt easily. Brown shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Wheeliams eats them both and turns towards Brown to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo. Wheeliams fails with a takedown attempt. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Wheeliams is defended easily by Brown. Derown Wheeliams seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Brown lands an overhand right. Brown misses with a two punch combination.
Wheeliams fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Brown to the ground. Wheeliams is now in Brown's guard. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Wheeliams postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Brown is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Wheeliams, into his guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Wheeliams wants to sweep but no luck. Wheeliams has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Brown can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Wheeliams is looking for a triangle but Brown pushes his legs off easily.

A right-left combo lands from Brown. Brown throws a right hand that Wheeliams ducks under and follows up with a left that Wheeliams also avoids with ease. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Wheeliams fails with the takedown and Brown cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Kendell Brown is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Brown lands with a shot to the body. Wheeliams fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Wheeliams is trying hard to land a takedown here. Brown sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Wheeliams changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Brown tries to avoid it but Wheeliams manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Brown to the ground. Brown escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Wheeliams is breathing heavily. Wheeliams fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Wheeliams shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Wheeliams showed some decent athleticism there. Brown really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Wheeliams. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Wheeliams is looking for a kimura but Brown is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Wheeliams to get the leverage. Brown is trying to stand back up but Wheeliams is controlling him

Wheeliams is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Brown doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Wheeliams. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Wheeliams passes to side control. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Wheeliams closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Brown to the mat! Brown manages to get full guard. Wheeliams stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Brown swivels though and keeps the full guard. Wheeliams drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Wheeliams jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Wheeliams seems to be working for a kimura but Brown defends the submission attempt. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Brown can do anything to dispel that myth. Wheeliams is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Brown! Wheeliams working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Brown looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Wheeliams!
