Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Barry Obomba! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Juliet Nazar! The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Luis Engracia and Matheus Silva.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nazar will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Nazar misses with a takedown attempt and Obomba counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Obomba is looking to take a break and control but Nazar is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Obomba looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Nazar gets full guard. Obomba missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Obomba postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. This has been an exciting period of action! Obomba wants to pass the guard but Nazar is keeping the position. Obomba connects with a couple of short punches. Nazar should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Obomba looking to pass the guard. Nazar is trying to keep Obomba in close.
Obomba scores with a decent looking elbow strike. Obomba loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Nazar is trying to control the position but Obomba postures up. Obomba has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Obomba is working Nazar over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
That's one minute gone in the round. Obomba landing some decent shots from guard. Nazar working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Obomba. Nazar is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Obomba loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Obomba trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Obomba won't allow Nazar to sweep him here. Obomba is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Obomba keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Nazar's head. Obomba got a little sloppy there for a moment and Nazar has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Obomba has managed to get both his arms back between Nazar's legs - danger averted. Nazar looks gassed! Nazar controls Obomba momentarily but Obomba frees himself. Obomba trying to control the position from guard on top but Nazar is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Obomba will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Obomba scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Nazar is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Obomba is aware though and is defending well. Nazar can't keep his opponent in guard - Obomba advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Obomba landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Nazar is in trouble now - Obomba has advanced to mount! Nazar is trying to escape the mount.
Obomba is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Nazar can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Obomba breaks from Nazar's wrist control and lands an elbow. Obomba in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
Obomba throws some shoulder strikes here and then postures up. Oh, he's gone for an armbar! Nazar has his hands clasped together but Obomba breaks the hold and Nazar is forced to tap! This one is aaaaaaaaaaall over! That was lightning fast by Obomba!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Barry Obomba! Barry Obomba retains his lightweight title!
