PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between John Alphen Martirez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bryce Ugle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, John Alphen Martirez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Bryce Ugle!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Eliza Hachem and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Martirez tries to close the distance and clinch up but Ugle swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Ugle bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Ugle creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Martirez sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
You can see the frustration on Martirez's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Ugle misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Ugle is trying to ground and pound but Martirez uses the momentary lack of control by Ugle to regain half guard.

Martirez has his foot on Ugle's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Ugle works his way back into a safe position though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Bryce Ugle wasn't active enough on the ground.
Ugle closes this distance looking for a takedown but Martirez circles away.
Donk. Martirez catches Ugle right on the button with a cross.
Horrible takedown by Ugle or perhaps it was just good defense by Martirez which made him look bad.

Martirez shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Ugle manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Ugle is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Martirez defends well.

Martirez tries to stand but Ugle is controlling from the bottom.

Martirez has gone for a leg lock! Ugle slips out almost immediately though and dives into Martirez's guard.

Ugle drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Martirez manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Ugle has Martirez in his guard.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Martirez throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Ugle was covering up waiting for the punch and Martirez finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Martirez drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Martirez jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Bryce Ugle has got the better of the ground game so far.
Ugle has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Ugle really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Martirez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Ugle fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Martirez sprawls well initially but Ugle persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Ugle thows a huge punch but Martirez dodges it nicely.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Ugle seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Bryce Ugle showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Ugle tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Ugle has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Ugle wants to control for a moment but Martirez uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.

Bryce Ugle is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

I've got Ugle winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
