The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Van Der Heijden shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Ivey pinned against the cage. Ivey gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Horrible takedown by Ivey or perhaps it was just good defense by Van Der Heijden which made him look bad. A momentary lapse in concentration from Van Der Heijden enables Ivey to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Van Der Heijden manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Van Der Heijden is working an open guard so Ivey takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Ivey shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Van Der Heijden but Van Der Heijden pushes him off and we're back to square one. Ivey fails with a takedown attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mike Ivey. That's going to take a lot out of him. Ivey throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Van Der Heijden's waist but Van Der Heijden gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Ivey off to one side. Van Der Heijden shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Ivey is trying to defend but Van Der Heijden finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Van Der Heijden is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Van Der Heijden working over Ivey with some ground and pound. Ivey looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
That's one minute gone in the round. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Van Der Heijden connects with a nice short shot to Ivey's temple. Van Der Heijden has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Ivey wants to control but Van Der Heijden is keeping busy.

Mike Ivey seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Van Der Heijden throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Ivey. Van Der Heijden gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Ivey is trying to pull guard but Van Der Heijden has him pressed against the cage.

The fighters roll with the hold and Ivey manages to kick Van Der Heijden off! Van Der Heijden jumps back into Ivey's guard. Ivey throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Van Der Heijden advances to half guard. Van Der Heijden is working for a submission of some sort.

Ivey wants to control the action here but instead Van Der Heijden manages to pass to full mount! Ivey taking shots to the head. Ivey is trying to escape the mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Ivey is desperately trying to improve his position but Van Der Heijden has a good base and remains in mount. Van Der Heijden controlling the position easily from mount. Ivey tries to lock up and control but Van Der Heijden gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. This has been an exciting period of action! Ivey looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back! Van Der Heijden is working on the RNC. He looks like he's got it but Ivey won't tap... Oh, he's out! The ref rips Van Der Heijden off his unconscious opponent!
