PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Foul Play (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Virgil Beck (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Play comes into the arena with Simon Says-Pharaohe Monche blaring out of the sound system. The crowd seem to be enjoying Beck's choice of entrance music: Cell Therapy by Goodie Mob. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 22 - 11 - 1, fighting out of New York, Foul Play!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Virgil Beck!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Franklyn Lucas and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Beck tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Beck is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Play.
Beck throws out a loose jab but Play uses good head movement to avoid it.
A good leg kick by Beck.
Beck lands a body shot.
Beck looks to score with a jab to the body but Play is just out of range.
Play lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Play moves away from the strike by Beck.
Beck needs to keep his hands up - Play had a free shot at his head there.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Play lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Beck has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Beck and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Beck steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Play.
Beck throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Play avoids the body shot from Beck.
Beck shoots in for a double leg but Play sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Play tries to work over Beck's front leg with a kick but Beck checks it.
Play ducks under a wild hook from Beck.

Beck misses with a wild body shot.
Play feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Becks jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
Play looks to score with a jab to the body but Beck is just out of range.
Beck misses with a body kick.

Beck changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Play looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Beck goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Play has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Beck but great work by Play.
Beck is trying to improve his position.
You can see the frustration on Beck's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Play trying to control the action but Beck is working from the bottom.
Beck wants to get back to his feet.

Beck manages to work his way to half guard, despite Play's best efforts.
Beck gets back to full guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Play stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Beck swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Play wants to control from the top but Beck keeps moving.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Beck is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Beck is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Beck has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Play is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Beck.

Play lands some shots froms side control.
Beck wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Beck tries to buck Play off but Play is having none of it.
Play working away.
Play wants to lay and pray for a moment but Beck keeps working.
Beck is looking for a sweep.
Play controls the position from side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Virgil Beck will probably get the nod.

and Beck counters with a straight right hand.
Play ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Play throws a leg kick but Beck checks it.
Beck throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Play throws a right hand that misses
and Beck counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Beck with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Play to score with a decent uppercut.
Beck misses with a straight right.
Beck looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Beck throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Beck.

Beck jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Play ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Beck moves away.
Play with a body punch. A glancing blow.
Play swings and misses with a shot to the body
and Beck counters with a nice body shot.
Beck closes this distance looking for a takedown but Play circles away.
Foul Play has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Virgil Beck.
Beck is trying hard to land a takedown here. Play sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Foul Play is winning the standup battle so far.
Beck throws out a loose jab but Play uses good head movement to avoid it.

Play thows a left - swing and a miss!
Play lands a nice hook to Beck's body. Beck takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Play keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Play connects with a leg kick. Beck looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Virgil Beck seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Beck is breathing heavily.
Beck takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

Play holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Beck tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Play is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Foul Play will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


A decent looking body kick lands there for Beck.

Play throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Beck throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Beck.

Beck thows a body shot but no joy.
Beck thows a left - swing and a miss!
Play feints and then cracks Beck's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Beck down.
Play comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

Beck moves out of range of the strikes.
Play lands with a thumping leg kick.
Beck shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Beck misses with a lunging right hand
letting Play counter with a right hand.
Beck looks to throw the jab but Play is out of range.
Beck fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Play manages to avoid it.
A lazy left from Play finds it's target.
A decent looking cross lands there for Play.
Play looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Beck lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Beck throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Beck chopping away at his opponent's legs.

Beck lands an overhand right.
Play walks into a straight right hand from Beck.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Beck misses with the combination.
Play connects with a body shot that sends Beck's belly button to the back.
Beck takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Play connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Beck swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Beck doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Play moves out of range as Beck strikes.
Play works over Beck's head and body with a nice combination.
Beck cracks Play with an open hand slap.
Play looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Play lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Beck circles away quickly and effectively.

Play looks to land a left hand but Beck moved out of range nicely.
Play misses the shot to the body.
No joy there for Beck, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
A bone on bone clash there as Beck blocks the leg kick.
Beck misses with a combination
and Play counters with a thumping low kick.
Play slips under a jab from Beck.

Beck scores with a takedown into Play's guard.
Play is trying to control the position but Beck postures up.

Play manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Beck manages to get himself to full guard.
Play trying to control but Beck is working from the bottom.

Beck escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Play gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Play trying to control the position from guard on top but Beck is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Foul Play.
I think Play has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
