PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ari Pagonis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Reid (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pagonis comes to the cage accompanied by War Games. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ari Pagonis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Paul Reid!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Bruno Hogan and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Reid closes the distance and clinches up with Pagonis, looking for a takedown. Reid pushes Pagonis against the cage but Pagonis circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Pagonis is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
The fight stays on the outside here - Pagonis looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Horrible takedown by Reid or perhaps it was just good defense by Pagonis which made him look bad.

Pagonis moves into the clinch successfully.
Pagonis prevents Reid from breaking the clinch.

Pagonis breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Reid clinches up with Pagonis and pushes him back against the cage.
Pagonis misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Reid.

Pagonis tries to pull guard but Reid forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Reid should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Reid escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Paul Reid seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Pagonis really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Reid tries to break free but Pagonis pushes him back against the cage.
Pagonis throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Reid blocks it with crossed arms.

Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Pagonis obliges.

Pagonis's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Reid shoots in looking for a takedown. Pagonis tries to sprawl out of it but Reid keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Pagonis manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Pagonis doesn't manage to clinch there - Reid circles away.

and Pagonis holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Pagonis is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.

Pagonis is pushing Reid up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

That's time! Pagonis's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Pagonis tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Reid paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Reid moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Pagonis moves out of range as Reid throws a body kick.

Reid gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Pagonis using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Reid has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Pagonis has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Reid uses from the top position.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Reid won't allow Pagonis to sweep him here.

Reid is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Pagonis is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Pagonis has escaped and now he's on top!
Reid is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Pagonis dives into side control.
Reid is breathing heavily.

Reid is not content to let Pagonis control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Reid bucks up and tries to throw Pagonis off but instead Pagonis has got his back!

What can Reid do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!

Pagonis will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Pagonis is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Ari Pagonis just wasn't active enough.

Reid prevents Pagonis from getting back to his feet.

Reid gets to his feet - Pagonis follows without any prompting.

Pagonis shoots in for a double leg but Reid sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Pagonis is looking to clinch but Reid is avoiding it.
Pagonis shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Reid as he jumps to the side.
Reid tries to score a power double leg takedown but Pagonis sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Reid somewhat.
Pagonis fails in his attempt to clinch.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ari Pagonis showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Pagonis has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
