Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Anderson Alves! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jake Smith! The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Joseph Jones and Bruno Lombardi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Alves tries for a takedown but Smith circles away easily and Smith counters with a nice kick to the body. Alves misses with a takedown attempt and Smith counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Alves regains full guard. Nicely done. Alves really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Smith wants to stand but Alves has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Alves will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Alves keeping full guard, as Smith tries to pass. Alves has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. Smith would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Alves swivels though and keeps the full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Alves is trying to control the position but Smith postures up.
The ref stands the fighters back up because Anderson Alves just wasn't active enough. Alves fails miserably with a takedown attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Anderson Alves. That's going to take a lot out of him. No luck for Alves with that takedown attempt. Smith drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Smith tries to advance to mount but can't. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Smith cracks Alves with a big right hand but Alves just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smith is trying to move to mount but Alves reverses beautifully and ends up in Smith's guard. Alves stops Smith from standing up. Smith looks gassed! Alves working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Smith is looking to stand up but Alves isn't so interested in that idea. This has been an exciting period of action! He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Smith is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!
