PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Dirk Diggler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Makoto Shibasaki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shibasaki comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Genki Sudo - 'Mind Shift' kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Dirk Diggler!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Makoto Shibasaki!
The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Aleksandr Martynov and Ivan Kurochkin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Diggler throws a poor cross that misses

and Shibasaki holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Shibasaki lands an uppercut.
Diggler wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Diggler is trying to break the clinch but Shibasaki is controlling him.
Diggler tries to circle away but Shibasaki has him pinned against the cage.

Shibasaki slips a jab and a cross from Diggler.
Diggler keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Diggler looks to land a combination but Shibasaki avoids it well.
Shibasaki throws a body punch but Diggler moves out of range.

Dirk Diggler seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Diggler takes a swing at Shibasaki's ribcage but misses.
Diggler swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Shibasaki counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.

Diggler throws a lazy uppercut
and Diggler takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Shibasaki shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Diggler napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Shibasaki tries to move to mount but Diggler blocks the move with his legs.
Shibasaki wants to control but Diggler is keeping him busy.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Diggler is trying to control Shibasaki's posture but Shibasaki avoids it.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Shibasaki throws a strike aimed at the side of Diggler's head but Diggler avoids it well.
Shibasaki passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Diggler!
Diggler takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Diggler is rocked!

Shibasaki swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Diggler is now in Shibasaki's guard. A big mistake from Shibasaki there, giving up the dominant position!
Oh Diggler is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Shibasaki is pulling down on Diggler's head. It's preventing any offense from Diggler, at least for the moment.
Diggler seems to have got his legs back now.

Diggler throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shibasaki is controlling Diggler's posture.
Diggler postures up in Shibasaki's guard and throws a big left but Shibasaki blocks it.
Diggler has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Diggler has gone for a leg lock! Shibasaki slips out almost immediately though and dives into Diggler's guard.
Diggler wants to stand up but Shibasaki is controlling him.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Makoto Shibasaki dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Shibasaki moves out of range as Diggler throws a body kick.
Shibasaki cracks Diggler with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.

Shibasaki shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Diggler manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Shibasaki loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Shibasaki won't allow Diggler to get back to his feet.

Diggler can't keep his opponent in guard - Shibasaki advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Shibasaki seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Diggler does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Shibasaki is working for a kimura but Diggler is defending it quite comfortably.
Shibasaki is looking to take a break and control but Diggler is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Shibasaki passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Diggler!

The referee warns Diggler that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Shibasaki postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Diggler looks a forlorn figure.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Diggler's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.
Diggler takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Diggler is desperately trying to improve his position but Shibasaki has a good base and remains in mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Makoto Shibasaki showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Diggler is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Shibasaki.
A looping hook to the body misses from Diggler. Shibasaki does a little dance to reset his feet.

Shibasaki closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Diggler quickly recovers to half guard.
Shibasaki frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Shibasaki breaks from Diggler's wrist control and lands an elbow.


It looks like Dirk Diggler has been cut.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Diggler keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Shibasaki cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Shibasaki unloads with some vicious shots from mount and Diggler wants out - he looks towards the referee who steps in to save him! Shibasaki celebrates on the cage and the crowd goes wild!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:46 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Makoto Shibasaki!
A very excited looking Makoto Shibasaki made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
