PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Matt Cole (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Compton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cole comes to the cage accompanied by I Just Had Sex - Lonely Island. Matt Cole has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Matt Cole!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, James Compton!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Steve Smith and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Compton shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Cole pinned against the cage. Cole gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Cole forces Compton back against the cage and clinches.
Compton tries to pull guard but Cole holds him up against the cage and eventually Compton drops back down to his feet.
Compton is looking to take this one to the mat.
Matt Cole has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Compton.
Compton is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Cole to keep the fight standing.
Compton fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Cole tries to break free but Compton pushes him back against the cage.
Compton changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Cole fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Compton shoots for a double leg takedown but Cole sprawls well. He's pushed Compton's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Cole shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Compton sprawls well. Compton wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Cole gets slowly back to his feet.
Compton shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Cole as he jumps to the side.

Compton looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Cole is fending him off so far but Compton persists. Nope, Cole circles away and we're back to standing.
Compton shoots and misses

and Cole counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Cole.
Cole wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Cole jumps guard and drags Compton to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Cole can't keep his opponent in guard - Compton advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Compton wants to control but Cole is keeping him busy.

Cole is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Compton pulls his head out easily.
Cole tries to roll over but Compton keeps him under control.

Cole is looking to escape.
Compton trying to control from half guard but Cole is working away.
Compton wants to stand up but Cole has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Cole is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Compton trying to control the action but Cole is working from the bottom.
Cole really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

The ref stands the fighters back up. James Compton was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Compton closes this distance looking for a takedown but Cole circles away.

Cole clobbers Compton with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Cole shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Compton as he jumps to the side.

Compton fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Cole to the ground. Compton is now in Cole's guard.

Compton stands up and waves to Cole to follow him.
Compton looks for a takedown but Cole sprawls well.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Cole is defended easily by Compton.

Cole drives through and clinches with Compton against the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Compton is working for takedown but Cole is calmly controlling the position for now.
Cole lands a hook to the side of the head.
Compton misses with an elbow strike.

Cole has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Compton uses from the top position.
Compton passes into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Compton prevents Cole from improving his position.
Cole is breathing heavily.
Compton is keen to just control but Cole is a slippery customer.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cole is looking to get back to full guard here but Compton has managed to pass to side control instead.
Cole manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but James Compton will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Cole shoots for a takedown but Compton saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Cole leaves Compton with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Cole throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Cole clinches.
Compton tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Compton manages to break the clinch.
Matt Cole is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Cole shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Compton as he avoids it easily.
Cole tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Compton paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Compton wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Cole has him pressed against the cage.
Cole wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Cole manages to break the clinch.
Cole keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Compton closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Compton lands in his opponent's guard.

Cole looking for a sweep. Not yet Cole, not yet.
Cole keeping moving, preventing Compton from controlling successfully.

Cole looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Cole escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Compton gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Compton looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Compton trying to control the position from guard on top but Cole is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Cole is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Cole is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Compton is aware though and is defending well.

Compton lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Cole keeping moving, preventing Compton from controlling successfully.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by James Compton.
Compton shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Cole as he jumps to the side.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Cole tries a head kick but it misses.

Compton manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Cole on his heels. He'll look to pass Cole's guard now, I'm sure.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Compton showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Cole shoots in looking for a takedown but Compton manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Cole's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Some bone on bone action there as Compton checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.

James Compton seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Cole dives in and grabs Compton's left leg, looking for a takedown. Compton pushes down on Cole's head and hops out.

Compton shoots for a takedown but Cole saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Cole throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Compton.

Compton decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Cole keeping hold of Compton's head, controlling as best he can.
Cole tries to kick Compton off in order to stand up. Compton Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.
Cole knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Compton on the ground.
Compton wants to lay and pray for a moment but Cole keeps working.
Cole is looking for a sweep.

Compton in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... Cole is tapping! That's the end of the fight!
