PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Frankie Edgar (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Damian May (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Damian May was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Frankie Edgar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Damian May!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Gwen Towbar and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No joy there for May, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
May keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Edgar will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
May throws a nice looking combination but Edgar bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Edgar throws the left hand but May avoids the punch easily.
May is looking to clinch but Edgar is avoiding it.
May misses with a two punch combination.
Edgar misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Edgar looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.


It looks like Frankie Edgar has been cut.
Edgar misses with a low kick.
May throws a left and a right that both miss
and Edgar counters with a two punch combo.
May on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Edgar goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

Edgar throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.

Edgar looks to land a right hand but May moved out of range.
Edgar does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.

May drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Edgar has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but May can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
May tries to free his leg and advance position but Edgar is retaining full guard.

May is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
May's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
May trying to control the position from guard on top but Edgar is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Edgar manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

May keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Edgar goes for an armbar but he's not got it… May turns into him and now he's in Edgar's guard.

Edgar had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. May is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Edgar Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take May's back instead.
Edgar is breathing heavily.

Edgar working for a choke but May is defending well.
May just looking to survive in the bad position.

May is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
May tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
May tries to lock up and control but Edgar gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
May is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
May wants to hold on but Edgar pushes him away.

Edgar swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and May is now in Edgar's guard. A big mistake from Edgar there, giving up the dominant position!
May is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Damian May dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Frankie Edgar's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


May misses with the combination.

and May counters with a straight right hand.
Edgar throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
May misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

May looks to land a body kick but Edgar moved away.
May tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Edgar tests May's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Edgar looks to score with a jab to the body but May is just out of range.

and Edgar counters with a three punch combo that has May backing up. May nods at Edgar to acknowledge the strikes.
Edgar throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Edgar throws a right and a left that both miss.

May moves into range and clinches up with Edgar.
Edgar fails to pull guard.
May makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.

May manages to break the clinch.
Edgar throws a sloppy head kick and May moves out of range easily.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Edgar.
May throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Edgar is looking to wear down May with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Edgar dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on May. That did some damage!
Edgar throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
May swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Edgar pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Edgar takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Edgar throws a head kick that misses.
Edgar fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Edgar throws a right hand that May ducks under and follows up with a left that May also avoids with ease.
Edgar stuffs the takedown attempt from May. May gets slowly back to his feet.

May scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
May is taking a breather. Edgar says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

May is tying to control. Edgar wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Damian May showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

May decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Edgar, up you get!

May throws a series of punches but Edgar avoids them all with ease.

May is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
May postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
May throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Edgar works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
May wants to stand but Edgar is controlling his posture from full guard.
May slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Edgar has his foot on May's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. May works his way back into a safe position though.

May avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
May controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
May must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Despite being in the dominant position, Damian May just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Damian May comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well May has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
