The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Matthews rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Del Norte moves out of range and avoids them all easily. A punch combination from Del Norte misses. Del Norte has a takedown stuffed. Matthews closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Del Norte did well to prevent Matthews getting side control. Del Norte is looking to escape. Matthews is working for a submission of some sort.

Matthews closes the distance and clinches up with Del Norte, looking for a takedown. Matthews pushes Del Norte against the cage but Del Norte circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Matthews gets in close and instigates a clinch. Matthews pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Del Norte wants to clinch up but Matthews keeps it at a distance. Matthews lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Del Norte circles away quickly and effectively. Matthews clinches up against the cage.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Del Norte is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Matthews pulls him back up using the underhooks. Matthews misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Del Norte.

Del Norte steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Matthews. That one must have hurt. Matthews displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Del Norte. Matthews dips to his left and cracks Del Norte with an uppercut! Matthews throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Del Norte on the side of the head. Del Norte pushes Matthews up against the cage in a clinch. Del Norte works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard. This has been an exciting period of action! Matthews escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Del Norte gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Del Norte loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Del Norte trying to control but Matthews is working from the bottom. Del Norte landing some decent shots from guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Del Norte advances position into side control! Matthews tries to buck Del Norte off but Del Norte is having none of it. Del Norte lands some shots froms side control. Del Norte postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Del Norte works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head. Matthews is looking for a sweep. Del Norte working the ground and pound from side control. Del Norte is working Matthews over with some ground and pound from side control. Del Norte scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Matthews to see if he's OK. Matthews is working to avoid the ground and pound but Del Norte connects with a decent elbow.
Matthews is rocked! Matthews tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Del Norte wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Oh Matthews is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Del Norte lands a strong strike to the head of Matthews. That's dazed him! Del Norte looking to finish here. Matthews is waving his arms around trying to block but he's hurt badly - Del Norte lands more strikes and the referee steps in to end the fight!
