PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ben Askren (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gracie has chosen Holdin on to Black Metal as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. There are an array of beautiful celebrities at ringside tonight! I wonder if any of them paid for their tickets.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 21 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Matt Gracie!
The judges for this bout are Nard Betker, Daniel Blasius and Paulsen Ambrosius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gracie closes this distance looking for a takedown but Askren circles away.

Askren fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Gracie sprawls well initially but Askren persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Askren shoots in looking for a takedown but Gracie manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Askren's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Askren throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gracie's waist but Gracie gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Askren off to one side.

Askren is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Gracie's half guard.

Askren blocks the strikes from Gracie.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Askren is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Gracie still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Gracie has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!
Gracie wants to stand but Askren is controlling his arm.
Askren tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Gracie wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Gracie wants to lay and pray for a moment but Askren keeps working.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Askren on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Askren tries to get out of the position.
Gracie tries to stand but Askren is controlling his head.
Askren prevents Gracie from moving into mount.
Askren tries to bench press Gracie off him but Gracie keeps the position.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Askren throws a couple of punches but he's in a bad position and they don't land.

Gracie is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Askren is just riding it out for now. Gracie eventually gives up the hold.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Matt Gracie showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

and Askren holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Gracie wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Gracie decides to pull guard.

Askren drops back, looking for a kneebar! Gracie looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Gracie looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Gracie!
Askren is looking to reverse the position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Gracie thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Askren is looking to reverse the position.

I would just about give that final round to Matt Gracie.
Well Gracie has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
