Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rodger Lapedis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jonathan Bowers! The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Skip Squint and Summer Carpenter.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Lapedis scores with a crisp jab that stopped Bowers in his tracks.
It looks like Jonathan Bowers has been cut. The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Lapedis checks a leg kick. Bowers shoots in looking for a takedown. Lapedis tries to sprawl out of it but Bowers keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Lapedis manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Lapedis feints and as Bowers raises his hands in defense, Lapedis changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Bowers keeping full guard, as Lapedis tries to pass. Lapedis drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Lapedis jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Lapedis has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Bowers working for a triangle but Lapedis defends it easily.
Lapedis thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Bowers is looking for a triangle but Lapedis pushes his legs off easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lapedis stands up from guard. Let's bang! Bowers gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Bowers is rocked! Lapedis is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Bowers had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Lapedis is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Bowers Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Lapedis's back instead. Bowers looking to break Lapedis's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Lapedis remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Bowers will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Lapedis tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell! Lapedis bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done! Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Lapedis thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Lapedis drops back looking for a leg! Bowers is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Bowers manages to kick Lapedis off! Lapedis jumps back into Bowers's guard. Lapedis is breathing heavily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Lapedis wants to pass the guard but Bowers is keeping the position. Bowers working for submissions but it's allowed Lapedis to get to half guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Bowers tries to roll over but Lapedis keeps him under control. Lapedis is trying for a kimura here. Bowers looks like he's in a lot of pain... and he's tapping out! Lapedis wins by kimura!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:04 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Rodger Lapedis!
