Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rafael Fragata (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Shields (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Rafael Fragata! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jake Shields! The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Paul Gruel and Jeff Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Fragata moves in looking to clinch but Shields pushes him off. Left hook, right uppercut from Fragata. Nice sprawl there from Fragata as Shields shoots in. Shields fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Fragata could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Fragata fails with an attempt to clinch.
Fragata tries to clinch but Shields is having none of it. Fragata stalks Shields and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Shields's face. Shields staggers backwards, shaken. This has been an exciting period of action! Shields misses with a takedown attempt - Fragata sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Rafael Fragata has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jake Shields. Shields shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Fragata sprawls well. Fragata wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Shields gets slowly back to his feet. Fragata scores with a nice right hand.
Fragata shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Shields is trying to defend but Fragata finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. The fighters are battling for position here. Shields manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Shields looking to hit a scissor sweep but Fragata is one step ahead there.
That's one minute gone in the round. Fragata wants to control from the top but Shields keeps moving. Shields controlling the position. Fragata would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. Shields is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Jake Shields was stalling too much, according to the referee. Shields fails with the takedown. Fragata shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Shields's guard. Shields pulls Fragata in close to his closed guard and prevents Fragata from doing any damage or advancing position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Fragata trying to control the position from guard on top but Shields is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Shields is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Fragata has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Fragata tries to stand but Shields is controlling from the bottom.
The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Jake Shields wasn't active enough on the ground. Fragata tries to close the distance and clinch but Shields swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Fragata feints and as Shields raises his hands in defense, Fragata changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Shields looking for a sweep. Not yet Shields, not yet. Shields keeping moving, preventing Fragata from controlling successfully. Shields is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Shields looks winded! Shields is adopting a defensive guard. Fragata knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Shields on the ground.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Fragata preventing the sweep. Shields has a closed guard, preventing Fragata from standing up. Fragata won't allow Shields to sweep him here. Fragata is looking to stand up but Shields won't let him.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Nice sprawl there from Fragata as Shields shoots in. Fragata throws a nice looking combination but Shields bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Fragata throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Shields was covering up waiting for the punch and Fragata finishes the takedown easily into guard. Fragata being controlled here momentarily.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Shields bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Fragata's guard. Fragata working for a triangle but Shields defends it easily.
Shields looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Shields prevents Fragata from getting back to his feet. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Shields passes Fragata's right leg, so he's now in half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Rafael Fragata dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Fragata fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Shields sprawls well initially but Fragata persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Shields moves into full guard.
Shields looking for a sweep. Not yet Shields, not yet. Shields managing to control the position. Shields lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Fragata! Fragata is looking to get to half guard. Rafael Fragata overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Shields tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Shields lands a big elbow.
That's one minute gone in the round. Shields has control of Fragata's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Fragata regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Shields controlling his opponent. Shields lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Shields landing strikes from the mount and Fragata is in trouble! Shields controlling from mount. Shields with shots to the head and body - Fragata looks very uncomfortable down there.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A nice elbow there by Shields. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Shields lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Shields lands a big shot there that rocks Fragata but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Fragata is rocked! Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Shields drops a big elbow. That's hurt Fragata! More shots from Shields and the ref steps in! The fight is over!
