Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
20 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, bj Ferguson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
10 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Scott Smith! The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Ben Zyskovitsi and Marco Blurström.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ferguson pushes Smith up against the cage in a clinch. Ferguson pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage. Ferguson lands a takedown into guard.
Smith has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Ferguson can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Smith looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Ferguson trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Ferguson trying to control the position from guard on top but Smith is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Smith working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Ferguson has passed into half guard!
Ferguson moves into side control, avoiding a weak kimura attempt from Smith. Smith is trying to get back to half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. You can see the frustration on Smith's face as Ferguson controls the position. Ferguson wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Smith, who protects the arm well. Ferguson stands up. Ferguson manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Smith on his heels. He'll look to pass Smith's guard now, I'm sure. Ferguson trying to control but Smith is working from the bottom. Smith is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Smith is looking to cinch up a triangle. Ferguson throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Smith's body to avoid the submission. Smith has instead reached around Ferguson's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Smith arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:18 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Scott Smith! During a confident post fight interview, Scott Smith thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
