Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Karl Bates! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Sebastian Lyng! The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Alexandre Firmino and Luis Engracia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bates dives in and scores a takedown into Lyng's guard. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Lyng is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Lyng wants to stand but Bates is controlling the position. Lyng keeping moving, preventing Bates from controlling successfully. Bates trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Bates is working hard here to advance position. Bates engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
We're going to have a standup here because Karl Bates wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Lyng misses with a takedown attempt - Bates sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lyng tries to clinch up. The fight stays on the outside here - Lyng looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Lyng fails with a takedown attempt. Bates throws a low kick but Lyng avoids it. Lyng connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Bates momentarily.
Bates looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Lyng scores with a head kick.
Lyng tries to clinch but Bates is having none of it. Lyng misses with a takedown and Bates counters with a single leg into guard. Lyng didn't expect that. Karl Bates has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sebastian Lyng.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Bates slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Bates pushes down on Lyng's leg and manages to get into half guard. Bates could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Lyng has a hand on Bates's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Bates takes advantage of the position though and mounts him! Bates controlling his opponent. Bates working away from the top, dropping strikes. Bates has control of Lyng's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Lyng regains control of the situation pretty easily.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Lyng is trying to reverse the position but instead Bates has taken his back - oops! I really don't envy Lyng right now.
Lyng is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Bates is looking to finish with some ground and pound! Bates has the hooks in. Lyng is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. Bates tightening his grip on Lyng, looking for the choke. Lyng wants to get back to his feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Bates looking to break Lyng's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Lyng remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Bates will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke! Bates gets his hands free as Lyng looks to control. Bates controlling from the back. Lyng defending nicely against the rear naked choke attempt.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Bates is looking to control Lyng but Lyng is wriggling around and keeping busy. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Karl Bates dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Lyng gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Bates looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Lyng looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Bates has picked Lyng up and slammed him! Lyng can't keep hold of the triangle and Bates manages to pass to side control! Lyng is trying to get back to half guard. Lyng is letting Bates control him for a moment.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bates wants to control for a moment but Lyng uses the opportunity to move back to half guard. Bates trying to control the action but Lyng is working from the bottom. Bates tries to stand and escape but Lyng is controlling the position. Lyng trying to control from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Bates slows the pace down in half guard.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Karl Bates wasn't doing enough on the ground. Bates tries to clinch up but Lyng circles away and keeps his distance.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Lyng is looking to clinch but Bates is avoiding it.
Bates leaves Lyng with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Bates just misses with a punch to the body.
Bates instigates a clinch. Lyng is trying to break free. Bates blocks the elbow strike.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Bates creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut. Lyng wants to break free but Bates has control.
Bates escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Bates shoots for a takedown but Lyng saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Bates shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Lyng as he jumps to the side.
That's three minutes gone in the round. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Lyng. Lyng scores with a shot to the body.
Lyng tries to clinch but Bates is having none of it. Bates tries to close the distance and clinch up but Lyng swats him away and circles back towards the center. Bates shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Lyng pinned against the cage. Lyng gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Karl Bates. That's going to take a lot out of him. Bates throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Lyng's waist but Lyng gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Bates off to one side. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Lyng has closed the distance and engaged Bates in a clinch.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Lyng keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Bates's efforts to push away. Bates jumps guard but Lyng turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing. Lyng lands with a good tight uppercut to the head. Lyng breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Lyng tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Bates swivels and escapes. Bates looks for a takedown but Lyng sprawls well. Sloppy strikes from Lyng. Those never looked like landing. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Lyng doesn't succeed with the takedown and Bates holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch. Bates misses with the head strike.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Karl Bates dominated that second round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

He's persisting with it as Bates sprawls well. Bates wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Lyng gets slowly back to his feet. Bates just misses with a punch to the body.

Lyng is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage. Bates pulls guard effortlessly. Bates keeping moving, preventing Lyng from controlling successfully. Lyng looking to pass the guard. Bates on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Bates tries to get out of the position. Lyng takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Bates wants to stand up but Lyng is controlling him. Bates keeping moving, preventing Lyng from controlling successfully.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Bates pulls Lyng in to control the position.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Sebastian Lyng was stalling too much, according to the referee. Horrible takedown by Lyng or perhaps it was just good defense by Bates which made him look bad. Lyng gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily so Bates counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Bates is stalling in the full guard. Lyng working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Bates has passed into half guard!
Bates is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Lyng is just riding it out for now. Bates eventually gives up the hold.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Lyng on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Bates drops an elbow to the side of Lyng's head. Bates wants to stand up but Lyng has a hold of him and won't allow it. Sebastian Lyng has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Karl Bates is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Bates keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
And that's the end of the fight! Karl Bates showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Bates, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
