Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Steve Mills! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Justin Etches! The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, Trevor Gratis and Steve Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mills shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Etches counters by clinching up. Etches is trying to pull guard but Mills has him pressed against the cage. Etches pulls guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Etches throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Etches has eaten all the pies! Mills is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Mills wants to stand but Etches is controlling his posture from full guard. Etches is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Etches trying to control the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mills keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Etches's head. Mills passes Etches's left leg - he's now in half guard. Well, if Mills is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Etches is trying to get back to full guard. Mills not doing much here.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Etches wants to improve his position but Mills is controlling well.
Mills is looking for a kimura here.
Etches is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Etches trying to control here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mills is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Mills is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Steve Mills. Mills fails to land the takedown. Etches drives through with a takedown into Mills's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. Etches loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Mills looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Etches must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Etches cracks Mills with a solid left hand. Mills bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Etches's guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Mills's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Etches manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Mills manages to get himself to full guard.
This has been an exciting period of action! Mills utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Etches postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Mills is on top in guard.
Mills is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Mills scores with a decent looking elbow strike. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Mills is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Steve Mills will probably get the nod. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Etches lands the left hand. Mills rushes Etches and presses him up against the cage. Etches wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Mills has him pressed against the cage. Etches is defending well against a takedown attempt. Etches misses with a knee strike.
Mills tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Etches escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Etches looks for a takedown but Mills sprawls well. Etches tries to clinch up and Mills counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Mills. Mills lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mills is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound. Etches is trying to escape back to his feet but Mills uses the scramble to pass into side control.
Mills is putting a hurting on Etches here, landing some big shots from side control. Mills takes advantage of some sloppy striking from Etches to pass into mount. Mills content just to control the position here. Etches sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though. Mills trying to pass the guard but Etches defending well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mills is thwarting Etches's attempts to control the position. Etches is looking to escape. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Mills connects with a nice short shot to Etches's temple. Etches is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Etches is breathing heavily. Well, if Mills is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

That's three minutes gone in the round. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Etches has hold of Mills's hands but Mills slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Mills is controlling the pace.
Mills tries to pass the half guard into mount. Etches knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Mills tries to stand and escape but Etches actually recovers to full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Etches working a defensive guard here.
Etches is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Mills stands up over Etches, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Mills postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Mills seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Mills slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Steve Mills dominated that second round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!
Etches throws a nice looking combination but Mills bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Mills shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Etches throws a series of punches but Mills avoids them all with ease. Nice shot lands for Etches. Etches gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Mills escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Mills throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Mills shoots in and drives through. Etches sprawls well. Etches tries to clinch but Mills moves out of range. Etches looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Mills is fending him off so far but Etches persists. Nope, Mills circles away and we're back to standing. Mills misses with a combination
and Etches holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mills breaks from the clinch.
Mills scores with a takedown into Etches's guard. Mills makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Mills wants to pass the guard but Etches is keeping the position. Etches is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Mills dives into side control.
Mills passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Etches! You get the feeling that Etches really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Etches takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Etches is trying to escape the mount.
Mills pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage. Mills is working for a guillotine from mount but Etches frees his head quite easily.
Mills working for a submission but Etches is keeping him at bay. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Etches is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Etches tries to buck Mills off but Mills takes his back! Mills is trying to stick to Etches's back but Etches is turning into Mills. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Mills's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Etches. Mills is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Etches is controlling him. Mills controlling Etches's posture. Mills trying to control the position.
Mills wants to stand up but Etches is controlling him.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Mills working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Etches. Etches postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Mills looking for a sweep. Not yet Mills, not yet. Etches content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Mills is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Steve Mills. Mills avoids a lazy jab quite easily. Justin Etches has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Steve Mills is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Etches tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Mills was well out of range. Poor timing from Etches.
And that's the end of the fight! Steve Mills showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Mills, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
