PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Wade Sapp (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tommy Ward (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Wade Sapp!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Tommy Ward!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Steve Smith and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ward connects with the punch.

Sapp clinches.
Sapp tries to pull guard but Ward won't allow it.
Ward goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
A nice right hand lands inside from Ward.
Sapp blocks a body shot from Ward.
Ward misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Ward prevents a takedown attempt there.
Ward will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Sapp up against the cage.
Ward lands a body punch.
We've been hearing reports that Sapp has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.

Sapp has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Ward clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Ward wants to escape the position.
Ward breaks Sapp's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ward is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Ward sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Sapp's guard.
Ward trying to pass the guard but Sapp defending well.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Ward's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Ward working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Tommy Ward wasn't active enough on the ground.
Sapp with a poor takedown

and Ward counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Ward.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Wade Sapp. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Ward tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Sapp's elbow.
Sapp is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Ward pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Ward misses with a punch to the body.
Ward dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Ward makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Sapp is trying to force a seperation but Ward has the dominant position.
Sapp blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Ward lands a right hand.
Ward doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Ward lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Sapp backwards.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Sapp is working for takedown but Ward is calmly controlling the position for now.
Sapp is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Ward working some nice short punches in the clinch.

Sapp looking to slow down the pace here.
Sapp is trying to drag Ward to the mat but Ward just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Sapp is breathing heavily.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Ward.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ward pushes Sapp back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Sapp has Ward pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Ward manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Ward scores with a nice hook to the head.
A left hand lands to the body for Ward.
Ward softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage.

Sapp is rocked!
A right hand to the body from Ward.
Oh Sapp is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Ward digs a right hand into Sapp's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Sapp's gas tank.
Ward dips a shoulder and cracks Sapp with a mighty uppercut! Sapp falls back against the cage and Ward unloads with a barrage of strikes! Sapp is completely out with his eyes open, only supported by the cage! Save him ref! Eventually the ref decides to do his job and jumps in - Ward screams abuse at the incompetent official before going over to celebrate with his corner. Brutal stuff!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:35 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Tommy Ward!
